Adding a killswitch?
« on: February 27, 2008, 10:49:52 PM »
I've always kinda fancied killswitches... and I think I found the easiest way of doing it!

Momentary switch, poked through the hole of an un-used tone control! Now, to be honest, I've been pondering having the wiring of the Strat re-done to move the volume control because I'm always paranoid about catching it when I'm palm muting... but the Ravelle? Well, that would be even easier!

What about these? ;)

Completely different - Not nearly as practical. Would be an absolute pain to play using that as a killswitch.

Your best bet is a cheap push to make switch wired as the guy in the vid did.

I've had a killswitch put on a couple of my volume control-less guitars. They work just fine.

I was kinda kidding about that cable by the way ;)

I love the occasional killswitch-tom-foolery.

here's an interesting link for a suggestion on how to make a removeable killswitch, to avoid butchering or otherwise modding your guitar in any way. I think the enclosure he uses for the switch it way bigger than it needs to be but the general idea is good. Interesting anyway.

good idea to make it as a "short" as shown in the video

this way it doesn't force the signal through the cheapo switch all the time and has the same effect.

Got my £1.89 switch from Maplins and fitted it today, in the tone pot hole for the neck pickup (tone pot now lives inside the cavity, always on 10).
Works a treat, great fun !   Just gotta work out how I'm going to use it musically now.  :?

I'd rather create than copy. And, to be honest, I have absolutely nothing in common with buckethead's style at all.

Which idea did you use? Ie, which way of making the killswitch?

I pushed the tone pot for the neck pickup back into the cavity and used the hole for the switch - http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ModuleNo=2504&doy=3m3 - which I wired up between the ground and hot terminals of the input socket of the guitar. So pressing the switch makes a contact which shorts out the hot signal and takes it to ground, thus giving silence.

Is it at all hissy? I hear that's one of the complaints about these homejobs that it's not a "clean" break?

No hiss whatsoever.  There is utter silence, even using a high gain sound. That's the beauty of killing the signal by shorting it to ground.
There is the very slightest click when you release the switch if you listen very carefully but, in normal use, no-one would notice.

I'm a gimp, could you knock me up a little wiring diagram?

 :)

Also, how can you guarentee the tone control won't move? I know it's a bit of a stretch but isn't there some chance while it's rattling around in the cavity that it might turn a little?
