Heres what tone £80 gets you.
« on: February 29, 2008, 01:02:52 AM »
Once upon a time i had a fabulous ENGL Screamer 50, and one time i had a fantastic Marshall JTM-60.

One time i had a Gordon Smith Les Paul, one time i had a RG 550.

Now? i have a £50 strat from netto's and a Zoom G1.

The funny part is, i've had more fun with this set up than any before... probably because i wouldn't cry if any of it were broken in an unfortunate smelting accident.

Anyway, today i found another guitar cable so i can finally record and annoy everyone with cr@ppy recordings.

First up is a tool inspired recording where i came up with the riff at the begining about 5 seconds before hitting record, after that it's made up on the spot and a bit poo.

And then a distortion test, which one do you think is the best? theres 5 different ones i go through.

I am actually thinking of putting a Sinner in the bridge for shites and giggles, it's cheaper than a SD/Dimarzio and i'll be able to move it to a proper strat later on i guess...!

Heres another sketch, came up with the riff and then recorded my ideas as i went along. Shoddy playing i know.

This is the best i'll ever get this set up to sound, even though this must sound horrible, i wonder if 80 quid could get you a guitar and a soundmakingthing to sound like this 10 years ago?

I cant wait until i've got the Zoom G9.2tt or Tonelab... not sure, seems the G9 is superior in gainy situations, maybe its the two tubes.

I'd go with the tonelab for more organic tone. I did'nt have the Zoom G9  but the G7, and always seem to have clean channel louder than dirty syndrome.  too compressed in the gain section, even with no comp programmed.  Zoom was decent, with fast switching, but, I like my Lab way better, with just as fast --  minus a c- hair switching.

So would you suggest getting a 'lab and expanding to higher gain with the help of distortion/overdrives?

kind of like, treating the tonelab on very good rythm dirty setting and then boosting it with pedals infront of it... like i would with a good valve amp anyway.

tonelab will have better resale at least.

Maybe i should get a Blackstar HT-Dual first...

If you've got something to do a decent EQ with you'll be set.  I find the emulated out from the Dual is a bit dark sounding.

But it's a great pedal  :)

I could do some but, it's just as you'd expect really... cheapo strat, a bit battered.

Funny thing is i've had more guitar hours on that thing than probably any other guitar, because it's been around for a few years now!

I want one i want one i want one!!!

But... i think the DistX may be more up my street, seems to be their 'high gain monster' pedal which from what i hear can do the lower gain stuff too.

Also someone mentioned about it having two tubes, maybe the whole range has two... this was in a Harmony Central review here : [url]http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews/Effects/product/Blackstar/HT-Distx/10/1/url]

I have two problems against the Dual at the moment:

Number one is the wah issue i keep hearing about, does it depend on the wah or is it just a total anti-wah pedal?

And i hear it's a bit noisy/fuzzy on the second channel, can it really do high gain or is it classic rock in a box? maybe getting a OD and a DistX would be a better combo?

The blackstar HT range is too big and confusing, is a Dual a Dist with another channel or is it capable of DistX level gain? Ahhh!

Eitherway, i still want a Dual! just the other pedals, i can get them for £89 and i can actually afford that. sort of....

(that would bring my rig upto £169, half the price of a decent midrange guitar ;) )

Edit : Put in the HC review, was linking to something else :s

I have a HT Dual, the red channel does do very high gain... to the point that pinch harmonics get very hard to avoid...

Hmm... not too much noise? the wah problem still put's me off somewhat, though i don't have one i really want one.

I think i need to hear more clips, theres hardly any around! especially any that show off the distortion capabilities on chords and such.

Same here!

It's REALLY comfortable... I'm so glad somebody else agrees with me.

I'd love to make my own neck just like it, but with real wood of course!

Can't wait to see these pictures, it's something i nearly did myself :D

Boredom + Crate of Carlsberg + Nettocaster = This.

Our original plan was to get it half decent, and make a waterslide decal of the netto dog for the headstock, I put an old epi humbucker in the bridge and it didn't sound too bad, long story short we found a drill and a saw and this happened...

The neck single coil and epi have been removed, rather recklessly, might i add

"Nettocaster"

I dont know if I'd like to have one or not (I'm a fan of custom shops and doing up cheap guitars that have potential, you see).
