Ultimate 80's 1 pickup axe
« on: March 03, 2008, 07:19:34 PM »
I'm always thinking of building myself a Warmoth, and now the $ is so low i might even do something about it.

Once i wanted the entire guitar to be exotic woods but i think i like a more simple look now.

I think i want a strat body with a reverse KWS neck. But i don't really know which woods. I'm guessing an alder body and an all maple neck would be typical 80's?
I would want a locking tremolo, however i don't know which kind is best, so i would like some recommendations there to.
I also don't know which tuning pegs to choose, so i could use help there to.
It will only have a volume knob.

Then there is the looks question, what colour would look cool?

To sum it up i need help on which woods, bridge, tuning pegs and pickup to choose. Plus how it should look.
When its done i would want a no bullshitee 80's metal machine, that would be  used for Dio, Ozzy, Whitesnake, Crüe, Priest, VH old Gary Moore and similar.

Thank in advance everybody.

My Warmoth/semi-warmoth creations:

Alder will be a great choice. All 3 of those guitars have Warmoth necks on em.

For a bridge, go with an OFR. I prefer using a standard nut with a locking nut behind it.

You MUST go reverse headstock or it won't be proper 80s, unless you're doing the Charvel thing like I did with Yoshi.

Good luck with it!

The must used body woods in 80 was Basswood... It would be the cheaper too. Korina and Mahogany are good choices too!
To neck could be almost anything...

For the colour I would say: ANY flake color of their site (if you want it looks like a 80's of course)

Bridge: Original Floyd Rose or Schaller or Gotoh... they're good floyd roses...
Tuners: Schaller, Gotoh... can't go wrong with that...

Pickups: I believe Miracle Man or Nailbomb... But there is many pu that would work: Holydiver, Painkiller, Cold Sweat.............

Forgot:
Perhaps, for the bands you said, a 24-3/4" scale lenght could work very well!

The two guitars i have are both mahogny, so i would like something else, but i have always thought of basswood as discount wood so i wasn't really considering that.

That's actually real blood- His girlfriend battered herself to death with it when he brought it home.

Seriously though, this guy makes twinfan look like a minimalist.

People have already said the necessary stuff you need like woods etc.

But for pickups theres only 1 way to go, HOLY DIVER! It's just pure 80's.

Plain white with black hardware and zebra or black pickups, or even plastic covers would be quite 80s I guess. ;)

BTW TO, do you order the necks for longer nut pocket to fit the normal nut and the locking one? I'm interested in a similar thing using the Khaler 5514 string lock (the one without allens).

Thanks
