I've been playing the Cold Sweat bridge in my Charvel today and realised just how good a crunch and edge it's got to it's tone. Should be really great for that cheesy 70s and 80s rock thing I'm looking to do  :roll:

So now I'm probably going to keep the Charvel, which also affects the pickups I put in my Ibanez as well as the V  :lol:

I s'ppose it'd help if I knew what sort of tone I actually wanted from this V.

what woods is the V made from? is it an OFR?

does look good :) a bit like a modernised john birch with those pickups. how would you describe the tone?

Alder body, maple neck, ebony fretboard and yes, it's an OFR.

The tone is a bit hard to describe. It's kinda chubby, it has that sharp and solid edge of a ceramic magnet but at the same time it growls like crazy, it sounds freakin' HUGE. There's a lot of bass so you get a really nice thump from it, but it's still tight so it pretty much covers any heavier/faster styles of music :)

I just love it!  8)

I ordered the pickups for my V today..........

I ended up with a black covered Riff Raff for the bridge and a Black Mississippi Queen for the neck.

This leaves me to pick between Rebel Yells, Nail Bombs, Holy Divers and Painkillers for my Ibanez  :roll:

a quick note, put the cold sweat bridge back in the feline, and changed the pots to 1Meg, with no tone control on the bridge. i'm entirely happy with the results.

I was thinking of maybe doing that with the bridge Crawler on my LP, but I've always been a bit afraid of 1Meg pots sounding harsh/tinny.  I guess if it works with a ceramic pickup it should be OK with an alnico one.

the difference was somewhat subtle (but just enough) and i wouldn't worry about it sounding tinny. you could always try removing the tone pot first as a little experiment..?

Yeah, good idea.  I don't tend to use the bridge tone control in 2-pickup guitars much anyway.

I could try it while I've still got the cheapo Japanese pots before upgrading to CGE/CTS.

i dont know what your experience is philly q, but mine with pot quality has been a bit mixed. in my hamer (dimarzio pups), i changed them to cts and noticed almost nothing. being dissapointed, i didn't change pots again.

but i had some spare cts pots, and threw them in my steinberger. i don't know if it was because i was upgrading a guitar with decent pickups in or not, but i did notice an increase in clarity that time.

I think there's very little, if any, difference in sound or clarity, but what I do always notice is that the "usefulness" of the taper with US pots is far superior.  The Japanese pots always seem to be at full volume by about 3, then do nothing at all between 3 and 10.

I like the CGE pots WD sell, they're not as stiff as CTS and seem to work just as well.

i'd love to, but unfortunately the A5 mule V is in a different location to the riff raff V :(
