NAD - Vintage modern combo
« on: March 12, 2008, 10:04:09 AM »
Aswell as the prs singlecut (covered elsewhere) I have taken delivery of a vintage modern combo - I have more debt than sense!

It looks great in its purple/black - its really heavy and a lot bigger than I thought it would be (grief from er indoors)

Its very very nice. I think basically put if you don't like the treble heavy jcm800 style sound but with a stack more balls and gain then you won't like it - I haven't owned a marshall in years but I'm glad to be back.

It isn't straightforward to dial in with the 2 pre-amp controls but you do need to taylor it to suite the guitar. The detail adds highs and the body adds lows...........The PRS is quite bassy so ive got loads of detail gain and not so much body - this swaps around for my superstrat!

Its a lot thicker sounding than I remember - the combo has the aged greenbacks which propbably accounts for the difference. The mid boost helps a lot too.

I bought it for the slash style tones of the high dynamic range (basically a boost) and it delivers big time. But it is surprisingly versatile. It doesn't do creamy creamy lead tone a la cornford but it can be smooth. The low dynamic range is also an added bonus as far as i'm concerned with a nice jangly jtm45 type sound...

I really like it - if you've ever listened to the first Thunder album -  its a similar tone (classic marshall basically)

Its also a bargain at £600 ish

p.s. all the youtube clips are sh*t it doesn't sound like that at all. The best recorded sound I have heard of it is hunters 'immigrant song' - he might even post a link if he's around  :D   :D

I think that's probably why I'm not keen, but I know Hunter likes his treble  ;)

They seem popular with some folks, including Slash and Paul Gilbert, so with yourself and Hunter also liking it they can't be that bad!    Hope you enjoy it!

We need pics of the amp and the PRS  ;)

Is it easy to get Sykes like tones from 1987?

Yes - thats what it does best - it does take a little tweaking as there is a good range of sounds but it should nail that tone

That's a cornford next to it? Hoola, must be quite a difference as those cornfords are kinda dark, VMs kinda bright, right? I guess using an AB box and playing them both alternating or together must be quite a catch...

Looks good. I've been watching some videos on youtube and listening to hunters immigrant song clip and I'm well tempted to get a Vintage Modern if I can afford it after I've got my new computer sorted out. Does it do good low volume tones (my Laneys are pretty cr@p) and is the tone more classic marshall bite/roar than Laney which has more lower mids and a more modern sound.

I think it pretty much sounds like what you put in, here for example a clip of how it sounds with my P90 loaded guitar, same settings pretty much to the clip for Immigrant Song, similar flavour, but very different tone...

Re low level, I find it needs a bit to sound real good, but it's OK on low levels, just lacks some sustain then. Just go try one, you'll see yourself.

I actually love this treble-heavy Marshall sound, not too saturated.

Hunter, could you please post a link to that song again the others are talking about? (immigrant song)
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog
