sustainer question
« on: August 28, 2005, 09:09:45 PM »
Lately i have been looking into getting a sustainer equipped in to my guitar, but i also want to get a set of bare knuckle pickups in it.

I am looking into getting a sustainiac stealth sustainer which allows for a mini humbucker to be placed next to the single coil sized driver pickup in a standard humbucker mounting ring.

I think i might get a alnico v miricle man in the bridge, but i am still wondering what to do with the neck slot (or half of one i guess).

Does bare knuckle pickups make any minihumbuckers, or if not could you make a mule neck pickup in a mini humbucker size.

Thanks for your help

There is a mini-mule, it is a Les paul deluxe/firebird sized pickup.  I don't know if that will fit with the sustainer.   It sounds good, I have one.  Here is the picture from the gallery:

Thank you for your quick reply, i actually think that the pickup would work, only i would have to get rid of the cover and the surrounding pickup ring.

What would one of these pickups cost?

you cant take the cover off of mini humbuckers, they would fall apart!

oh sorry u guess maybe i might have been describing it wrong, I am looking for a hum cancelling pickup in a single space. i guess maybe i'm looking for a hot rails pickup but with more tone and a different sound

Wouldn't it work in the middle position? If it would I'd fee inclined to rout it for an H-S-H configuration, like one of Janick Gers' (Iron Maiden) strats, it's got the middle pup then a bucker in the necn and bridge.

Generally sustainer style pickups need to be in the neck slot as the string tension is less in this area and it's easier for the pickup to start the string moving.
As for a humcancelling single coil, unfortunately we don't make one.The main reason is I personally think the compromise in tone is too great.Squashing a humbucker, either by stacking 2 coils or having 2 minature coils side by side, never sounds like a real humbucker and also doesn't sound like a single coil either! We do, however, make a very powerful single coil especially for the neck slot which'll work fine-the Trilogy Suite neck. 8)

actually it would have to be a mini humbucker with the sustainiac, but after thinking it over i might not do the sustainer anyway. I dont have a floyd rose on the guitar it would be going on, and so i wouldn't be getting the most out of it anyway.

I think i might just go with a miricle man in the bridge and a mule in the neck both with gold covers.

could i get a gold cover on the pickups without the pole pieces sticking through like the tony iommi pickups?
