Gary Numan last night at Carling Academy Oxford

The man's still got it! His voice hasn't changed a bit - i was somewhat amazed as he's getting on a bit (50 I believe), he was up there rocking out with a strangely young looking tubeway army.
In case you didn't know (you probably didn't) he's touring his Replicas album at the moment. They pretty much played through the album, and then played a few other favorites in the encore.
Something I found extremely interesting was how they seemed to bring all of the songs 'up to date', using extremely modern equipment, and making all of the songs a lot heavier for a modern audience. There was a triple recto on stage for gods sake! I actually thought that was a bit overkill. Every time the bloke hit a chord the whole ground shook - insane. I don't know if many artists do this - I don't usually go and see any 'old' bands live.
But yeah it was a fantastic show, the sound was great, the army were all fantastic players (drums, bass guitar, lead guitar, 3 keyboardists (4 when gary was playing - mental), and Gary himself on rhythm guitar.
Go and see 'em!
LOVING the Mules!

Do you know who was playing bass for this tour ?

I missed him playing Belfast last week (only found out he was playing an hour before he was due on stage)

No idea of the guy's name, but he had shaved back and sides, with a short top, and long fringe, dyed black. He also had disturbingly large ears with an earing the shape of a crucifix. Sound familiar?
Whoever he was he was an awesome player, with great tone that really stood out (i hate when you go and see a band and you can't even hear the bass)

Another thing i forgot to mention is the drum sound! OMG best drum sound I've ever heard live, I don't know how they did it :? but it was so tight and clear and snappy. yum. Probably a really nice compressor?

Did the bass player sweat profusely and gurn like a maniac? Could be Norman Watt Roy who plays in The Blockheads but not really his style. The dyed hair made me think of him, then again who hasn't got a bit of just for men going on in the music bizz.

PP is a great bass player who Kilby pointed out. He was like the resident bassist on The Tube in the 80's. All fret less back then too.

Gary Numan made some great music years ago and it still sounds good now. Sounds like a good gig.

I briefly thought of Mr Roy Watt at the mention of the curcufix earring, however I think he has been completely bald for a good few years. I remember seeing Norman playing bass for Wilco Johnson, all I can say is that the two of them scared me with their gurning.

Mr Roy Watt is also the peron responsible for the bass playing on the 1st Frankie goes to Hollywood album (along with the rest of the Blockheads)

Only ever saw PP live once (so far) and the sound he gets is amazing

Kilby you're a gem! I always wondered who played bass on that album! I knew it wasn't the bloke on the album cover as I watched them live on telly once and they were shite. So the Blockheads did it all...hmmm. They are some of the most talented musicians to come out of this country IMO. I saw them with Ian Dury at The Forum once and they were amazing. The gurning was due to the amounts of speed he used to take, I mean those flaming eyes were just like Johnny Cash's! I thought that the bass may have been Trevor Horn but it was just toooo good.

I loved the guitar on that album too. The speed accounts for this link (don't follow it if you are easily creeped out) http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/6131854.stm. I always liked the Blockheads but never got the opportunity to see them.

Man....His Hampsteads are fuking terrible! This is a coincidence as I'm having 1700 quids worth of dentistry going on at the moment. Mine are nothing like those though, they're like a row of condemned houses.
I'm having two root canals, porcelain crowns and another little filling. His bill will be the price of a decent second hand Beemer! He should give up the smokes too, I have!

Yes the guitar on the album was good too, definitely not that bloke they called Nasher.

His teeth show the evils of speed. Heh don't start me about dental treatment (3 root canals since early December, and one of my porcelin crown is still sitting in my wallet). Mine just show the evils of full contact martial arts, skateboarding and sugar.

Good luck with the dental work as the work seems to take forever to get completed

Actually I like that FGOTH album a lot (I think it was a very early digital recording, with Donald Fagins Nightfly being the 1st)
Goodbye London !

I had a root canal done a few years back as a result of being knocked spark out by a Greek body builder bouncer when I was 20
What marshall arts are you into? I was thinking of taking up Tai Kwon Do again. I've got a skateboard too but no teeth loss due to it, i nearly lost a rib trying to do rail grinds!   Tried speed a few times and it's filth but quite handy if your gigging on the road all the time i should think.
I've got another 3 visits at the dentists, had 7 so far. I have to take a Valium as i can't relax enough! Are you getting yours finished soon?
The Nightfly, another good album!

In the early 70's I once did 6 or 7 straight days awake with speed {pure crystal meth free from Uncle Sam!}, while touring the US bases in Germany.  No one is really sure how many days - least of all me!  When I crashed I slept for 36 hours and missed a gig!  I learnt my lesson and never touched the stuff again!!!  Kids, don't try this  - it will mess you up!  I stick to booze now.
So many pickups, so little time

Heh I was heavily into tae kwon do for several years, but disliked having to be the instructors mate to be allowed to do gradings. Lost several teeth due to higher graded (but inferior) members not having proper control of their techniques.

I got into Akido which is the coolest martial art of all (whats with all this hitting people it hurts your hands) it's more fun to fling people around with minimal effort. A friend from london attends a pretty good club with an ex Israli special forces guy, who mixes Tae Kwon Do with other martial arts (if you need an address or phone # then PM me). Unfortunitely family life and asthma put an end to the Akido.

I can relax OK but have a monster gag reflex which causes havoc when it comes to Xrays & casts. All the rest is cool though. I have 2 visits to get either a crown refitted or a new one made (shudders at price of a new one). That crown got loosened last year when I got myself mashed ribs

I saw what speed (& other items) did to other people (37 stab wounds in the case of one aquantance) so it didn't appeal to me. My asthma stopped my herbal fun & depression made space excursions a bad idea
Goodbye London !

That number sounds good, a mix of two things is just the sort of thing I'm looking for!

I'm having massive gag problems with x-rays and impressions too Kilby. Just get your dentist to prescribe you some 5mg diazepam. Sorted, you won't even notice and it gives you an excuse to chat up your dentist an nurse presuming they're both chicks! Gave up the peculiar smelling woodbines about 7 months ago. Gave up Golden Virginia just after Christmas. I found my iron will again from somewhere! Depression, been there too mate, just find time to be silly and laugh!
