Painkiller metal (guess the songs)
« on: March 14, 2008, 04:10:17 PM »
Was trying out different mics at the weekend & recorded this clip without too many mistakes, so I decided to post it here.

There's a prize to anyone who can name the bands & songs whose riffs I'm butchering here (hint: there are 4).  Actually, there's no prize, just the kudos (?) of having the same weird tastes as me :)

Guitar: Jackson KV2 with Painkiller bridge
Amp: Engl Savage 120 head, Mesa Recto 2x12" cab (vintage 30s)
Mic/Recording: Shure SM-57, Presonus Bluetube DP, Fostex MR16HD

Enjoy
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

Good playing though. :)

The slow stuff at the end was cool. Im not to into all that gain though, even if it did compliment your riffs nicely!

The second riff sounded like Exodus to me, the only one I actually know is CFH though. If you turn down the gain to get rid of the fizz I think that'd be a really good metal tone.

Riff 3 is from Obituary's 'Til Death, great f*cking CD!
I like the sound of the open strings in the fourth riff, reminds me of De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas from Maynem, really cool.
Where was the mic placement? Sounded kinda gritty like you get from the centre aye

I REALLY liked the "meatness" of the tone, just disliked the "shishishi" harshness of it. but i do liked it anyway.

Thanks for the comments.

Yes, it's easy to get carried away with the gain on the Engl Savage - there's absolutely bucket loads of it!  (FWIW, I had it just below 8 for this clip - I can't imagine how anyone would want/need to turn it to 10)

It was close mic'd pretty much centre with the SM57.

& you managed to get 2½ of the guesses :), the full list:
Pantera, Cowboys from hell
Exodus, Brain dead
Obituary, 'Til death
Godflesh, Black boned angel
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)
