It's all about supply and demand really. The world of collecting is all about this.

It doesn't matter if it's a 1960 Gibson Les Paul, a rare penny black stamp or a copy of Fantastic four number 1.

If there's a market for a certain item - like this - then people will continue to fork out cash for it.

I don't think it looks like much to be honest, but to a collector this may be the Holy Grail that would greatly enhance their collection. Note I don't say complete their collection, as collectors by their very nature never stop collecting ...

I can say this with some conviction as an ex collector of vintage US comics. I managed to stop myself before the anal, introverted nature of collecting got the better of me but you can bet your boots that somewhere in the world a guitar collecter is looking at this auction and is sweating bullets about it :D

Would be kind of cool to buy and play a couple of these in the 60's, do nothing but play guitar and earn just enough cash to eat and then retire from the huge amount of cash you get selling them......

Kind of funky maybe, but funny idea IMO......

Yeh..somewhere I've got an early 60's Selmer catalogue with both Fender and Gibson guitars in it - I seem to remember the Les Paul (which had just changed to the new "SG" shape at that time) was advertised at 125 guineas :o (for younger readers a guinea was £1- 1 shilling or £1.05).
I reckon I could probably get that amount for the catalogue now if i could find it :lol:

I suppose its all relative - if you are properly loaded I imagine that kind of money is like me dropping a grand on a guitar.

I really would like to have a go on a 58-60 les paul just to see if they really are 'the best'. A part of me suspects not. :roll:

how much is the most you think a guitar is actually worth?

i mean, some of these old things go for telephone numbers cos they're old, rare, famous owners etc... but how much can a guitar be worth purely as a working instrument?

tbh i'd struggle to justify the 2 grand some new instruments go for, but 10's, 100's of grand?

Again - its just supply and demand linked to desirability. Look at the ferrari 250 gto - as a means of getting around absolute rubbish but hiughly desirable and very rare hence £4m.......(ish)

yeah, the collectability factor... never understood that. never collected a damn thing... well stamps and coins at junior school. but adults who 'collect' stuff...ugh! it's all a bit retarded to my mind. if something doesn't serve a purpose, for me, it's out!

but yeah, there must be guys (it's always guys, right) fretting over that thing. i too would like to try one to see what the fuss is all about, but i also suspect it's much ado about nothing!

i like em new, tbh!
