New nut
« on: March 15, 2008, 04:13:12 PM »
Luthiers out there, maybe you can help me out.

I just put a new Tusq nut on my Les Paul. Everything went fine but my high B and E strings are just dead. They have half the sustain of the other strings and aren't nearly as loud. It is much more noticeable when played acoustically then through the amp.

I double checked the nut. I didn't sand anything down on those two strings, just on the bottom four strings did I need to go a bit deeper.

I noticed that there is the tiniest gap between the wood and the nut on the high E side at the very end. The bottom side seems flush all the way. Could this tiny gap be causing this?

Obviously, the strings are brand new so they aren't broken in but I hardly think that's what is causing it. Any ideas?

yes it could - the nut needs to seat very firmly into place with no gaps.. sounds like maybe the wood underneath the nut needs levelling slightly so it will sit properly - maybe a bit of old glue is still there or maybe it was never that level to begin with.  Dont cut the slots in the nut any deeper till you have that sorted
