Idea for a new pickup...
« on: March 15, 2008, 05:19:41 PM »
Call me stupid guys, but, a thought; What if Tim designed an 'active', battery powered pickup, ala EMG's or the SD Blackout? Call me an idiot if he's already done it, please do, but as far as I'm aware he hasn't and I know I'd replace the EMG in the RR24 I'm getting with an active BKP instantly. I mean, something with that much gain and BKP tone? Surely some of you must have ruined the carpet a LITTLE with that thought

That would go against the very spirit of Tim's designs for the company.
Anyway, a ceramic warpig outputs about the same as an EMG anyway; if you wanted more you could just use a boost pedal (like I do).
I too use chicken as a measurement.

the point was that it would be an all new design, that Tim would want to make, not a copy of an EMG. its called a hypothetical situation -_-

it would first of all mean getting someone to design and build the minature pre-amp that needs to go inside the pickup for it to be an active pickup

Tim just doesn't like active pickups I don't think.
I agree though; that shouldn't mean that he should outright refuse to offer them - there's definitely demand.
However, BKP is very well known for offering passive alternatives to existing active pickups, that sound BETTER.

I believe he is still in the short run with his latest models. And shouldn't update with new ones. Rather improve on the existing ones.

I like the idea though, it has been floating about this 'active pickup' talk. Ultimately it's up to Tim, and it doesn't seem likely.

Jonny, what do you mean when you say "in the short run with his latest models"?

It's an economical term.

Short run - an abstract period of time in there is at least one fixed factor (i.e. capital) and the rest are variable.

In other words, he's not at the stage where he can do much to increase such and such. But I might just be talking out of my ass to be honest.

the CWP doesnt at all sound like an EMG... it eats the EMG then spits it out

point is.. Tim doesnt want to stray away from traditional ways of making pickups. he doesnt even make single coil sized buckers.

An active BKP with enough gain to actually be worth it would have to have over the 23k that the cpig has... And that much gain is overkill and would sound like compressed arse.

an interesting point. still, it seems if i were to replace the emg-81 in the RR24 i'm getting, with say a Painkiller, (of which im seriously considering ^^), i'd have a wasted battery box on the back :P still ,suppose its a place to hold picks :D

you could use it to house power for a booster circuit within the guitar activated by a push/pull pot, hence converting your painkiller to an 'active' without losing the signature tone of the BKPs.
