Idea for a new pickup...

yeah but going back to the aforementioned point - with the high output on the majority of modern rocky/metally aimed pickups, aka PK's, WP's etc, what would be the point?

I think you answered yourself, what would be the point?
The only other advantage of active beside gain is they are low impedance. So just run an EMG Pa2 always on @ unity gain with any BKP and you have your low impedance.

You wouldn't need an outboard unit.
For example I use a boss SD-1 in front of my amp maxed out to provide a boost.
If I had that within my guitar I would have no need of the pedal and could also have other guitars set up with different circuits and reducing the number of outboard pedals I would have to carry.

I wouldn't bother though; it was just an alternative to a whole new pickup design that Tim might well, within his rights as proprietor of the company and chief winder, have outright refused to do for you.
I too use chicken as a measurement.

i love how people get all worked up on hypothetics :P - yeah if i were to do anything to that rr24 it would be to put in a PK rather than the EMG-81, but i think as its there i may as well use it. just need to figure something else to put the PK into :P

an interesting point. still, it seems if i were to replace the emg-81 in the RR24 i'm getting, with say a Painkiller, (of which im seriously considering ^^), i'd have a wasted battery box on the back :P still ,suppose its a place to hold picks :D
you could use it to house power for a booster circuit within the guitar activated by a push/pull pot, hence converting your painkiller to an 'active' without losing the signature tone of the BKPs.

Pretty sure EMG also offer a gain boost that can be installed on your axe and activated via a switch, don't know how good it sounds or how well it would work with BKPs though.

One of those RR24's came in to my shop the other day for a customer, if I were to do anything to it it would be sell it and buy a guitar that doesn't play like a raft.

If you've played and like it fair dos, but I know a huge number of them have been ordered and paid for unseen, if that's you, have a serious think mate, THE worst playing RR model I've ever played, just a horrid, odd contoured neck.

It's not a "It's just not for me" situation, I don't often get guitars in that I like particularly, but it's pretty unusual for me to get a guitar in that I think, holy shite, this is terrible

By coincidence I was looking through Steve Stevens interviews on the net today, to find out about his string gauge choice. In one interview he said that he thought the Nailbomb was the nearest thing he had heard to a higher quality version of an  EMG active pickup.

My own feeling about 'new' designs for BKP pickups is haven't we got enough flexibilty and tonal range already ?

( P.S. Steve Stevens  uses a E.B 10-52 on all his guitars)  :)
