Neck shootout part 2: leads & strumming (HD & CS)
« on: March 16, 2008, 02:39:03 PM »
After my recent neck cleans shootout someone wanted strummed chords, plus I've had a few PMs requesting neck leads, so I decided to combine the two requests into the same clip & improvised this solo over some simple chords.  Sorry not to do something more elaborate (my sweep picking is very untidy & needs a lot of work before I record with it  :)).

I only had time to do the Holy Diver & Cold Sweat, but will try to get to the others if people find this useful...

Guitars
Jackson RR1T w/Holy Diver neck
Jackson KV2 w/Cold Sweat neck

Amp: Engl Savage 120 head, Mesa Recto 2x12" cab (vintage 30s)
Mic/Recording: Shure SM57, Presonus Bluetube DP, Fostex MR16HD

Enjoy :)
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

This really does make me wonder what makes a good clean, I seem to have no perception. CS leads are nicest methinks.
Really couldn't tell that much difference for the strummed part :? :(

Yeah, sounded very similar. Both seem to be very bright for a neck pickup. Again, the diver sounds like it has more harmonics, which makes it win marginally in my book.
Thanks for the clips, Antag. Good stuff.

Sweet Lincoln, the lead was fookin' awesome.

I like the HD strumming and the CS lead, lol

That's excellent! Good thing you done that, you have now turned me off 'modern' neck pickups! Just not for me i think, i'm looking for something rounder and more vintage voiced for the neck.

Appreciated though, and awesome clips! Just helped me eliminate a neck humbucker category!

I'm not much into this kind of tone either, but as for pickups you really have to listen to the core of the tone, the vowel-sound coming from it. I'm sure these pickups can do more classic sounds aswell, it's just that these clips have very high gain.

That's true - I recorded these neck clips on the same channel of my Engl Savage as I used for my recent Painkiller bridge metal clip.  The only setting I changed was to turn down the gain from 8 to 7, so yes there was a lot of gain & it's a very "modern" voiced sound...

Weird - before listening I was sure I'd prefer the CS clean neck.  But after, I'd side with the HD...

Good clips, great idea.

I thought the HD had a bit more bite to it, both sound great though.

This was the tone the Ozzy Osbourne would refer to as 'Cow Tone' and wouldn't let his guitar players use it!

I'm searching for some time now for a neck pup to match the Holydiver in the bridge.

I liked the more tuby sound of the HDn more here but both are really great!

I think my Holydiver's partner is going to be a Holydiver. :)

Thanks for that it helped a lot.

HD clean.

CS/HD neck very similar either one. Probably Cs cuz I prefer dark necks.

I don't often post comments on the player section, but I have to say nice playing and I absolutely love the tone of the HD clip (much more than the CS which is nice but dosn't appeal to me nearly as much)
