Marshall cab speaker wiring - 4 X 12 - 8 Ohm speakers
« on: March 20, 2008, 07:48:13 PM »
Well, I shall shortly be taking possession of some new speakers for my cab, the current ones are all 16 Ohms I believe, and the new ones are to be 8 Ohms.
It has the more modern standard back plate:

Stereo at 8 Ohms each side
Mono 4 Ohms
Mono 16 Ohms

What do I do then?
It would be greatly appreciated if I could be talked through any changes in ohmage that would occur in what places, or even if it would be more appropriate to covert the cab into permanent stero of 16 Ohms (which has been my only thought so far   )

Thanks :)

bad move on the 8 ohm speakers, you can run them at 2ohms (99% of amps won't have a 2ohm tap), 8ohms or 32 ohms (again no amp is gonna have a 32ohm tap)

moral of the story - buy 16 ohm speakers for a 4x12 unless you want to be tied to an 8ohm cab

So its just replacing the speakers, no need to change any wiring, and then use what was previously a 16ohm input, as 8ohms?

since your only useable option is 8ohms, I'd personally just wire it up without all the switching junk and have it hard wired for 8ohms - there are plenty of schematics around on the net showing you how to do this.

alternatively, you could do as you suggested and use the previous 16 ohm mono setting as your 8 ohm mono setting.

the existing 4 ohm mono setting will now be 2 ohm mono and the 8 ohm stereo setting will be 4 ohm stereo.

Thanks a lot, just went to pick them up.
Its no big issue about the lack of diversity with Ohm settings, if I were to get another head, I would probably get another cab.

Oh, should probably let you know what I got :D

Still boxed, and the guy says he bought them from Maiden, whether true or not... doesn't bother me

Never really tried those Sidewinders - got one in a Marshall 1x12 that the previous owner had somehow blown (like wtf?)

I think I forgot to voice my extreme thanks!
Well, I just bought them for £35 each, and the seller has 4 left. sadly collection only, which is a shame for anyone too far.
Amp is just warming up...

That's a great price, I wish I was in England.  If he would be willing to send them to Yorkshire (at my expense), tell him I'll take all 4!  I'll bring them back here with me over my next few trips then!
