Pickup advice
« on: August 30, 2005, 09:40:57 AM »
Hi this is my first post, just need to say, i know the basics of pickups and tones but im not sure what pickup combinations would work well, im after something with alot of power and minimal hum, influences are machinehead, fear factory, cannibal corpse, pantera, so im after a really full bodied distortion sound, but with the ability to get really tight highs for fast picking.... so basically full bodied heavy rythm, ability to go tight high pitched.

I was thinking its either between nailbombs and warpigs, but would it be better to mix and match one of these with something else?

Plus i love the warpig distressed covers, i think they would suit my guitar nicely, here are some pics...

Its a jackson slsmg, neck through mahogany, bound neck, body and head and an awesome vaneer which ive never seen on an slsmg before, at the moment its just the bog standard mg-hz3 or mg-hz4 not to sure, but they dont give me much punch.

Any help would be appreciated, thankyou :-)

Welcome!

I have a Charvel XL650 - Mahogany neck and body with a thick maple cap. It's similar to yours. I have Miracle Man set, they really suit the construction and the low end is out of this world. It's balanced accross the range, with a precise treble, fast picking is ultra clear.

I find the Nailbombs not as tight in the bass but have a great aggressive mid that cuts through anything. Withoutwarning has done some great clips in the players section. Check out the BKP demos too to hear the differences between the MM and NB.

The Warpig is the king of chug, and really screams. But I prefer the MM or NB for fast leads.

hope that helps more than it confuses!

OMFG!! just listened to the miracle man set demo, i didnt click it mainly because the name sounds abit bluesy, but they sound awesome, thankyou for your words of wisdom, just need to wait on my next paycheck o come through.

EDIT: next question would be, is it possible to get a miracle man set with the distressed warpig style covers? i really like the look of them with the bolts sticking out.

Distressed covers are no problem....we build pickups for Doug at Black Machine Guitars like that and Pin, the Sikth guitarist uses them. We've done Nailbombs and Miracle Man humbuckers with all sorts of cosmetic tweaks. PDT_045

Miracle Man bluesy?!
I've never heard that before!

The MM is a 100% metal pickup! (or is that 666%? ;) ) It has a great natural compression to it, and harmonically, it's terrific for high gain riffing and leads.

The one I have has been 'cammo'd'; in short, it looks like it was drug, kicking & screaming, through some demented metalurgist's lab ... looks wonderful!!

Reet pay comes through on friday :-) mum is going to kill me for ordering these, keeps saying my money should be spent on myself.... which i suppose it is lol... just a few questions:

What does it mean by spacing? 50mm or 52mm? might be a stupid question but what difference does the measurement make?

Also with regards to the custom camo options and engraving, when ordering do you give a space where we can give the information of how wed like it to look?

I bet You'll need 52mm spacing - so that the strings line up over the pole peices, to check measure the distance between the high E and Low E - if it's close to 52mm, that's what you need, or if it's 50mm, then order a 50mm bridge pup. Neck i the same, it's onlt the bridge 'cause if you notice the strings are wider at the bridge than the heck.

hope that's  clearer than mud.....

We can only provide one style in engraved camo, thats the one at the top of the Nailbomb gallery. The font has been changed also. It now looks like this.

mwhahaha mums gunna tear me a new one when she gets back off holiday, ordered a miracle man calibrated set with camo covers, did order a tshirt and hat aswell so i can kinda argue that i did spend some money on clothes :-)

Tim i added a comment about the camo on my order and posted the url to the above picture of my guitar body, would it be possible to get the camo to be roughly the same style as the vaneer/grain?

Thankyou again, cant wait to test them :-)
