Covers for 2nd hand pickups
« on: March 23, 2008, 01:56:52 AM »
I'm thinking about getting some 2nd hand BKPs because of limited funds, but I want to have gold covers to match the hardware on my guitar.

Would it be okay to just order the covers from the BKP shop and fit them to the 2nd hand pickups? What exactly would I need to do, solder them?

This required wax potting to avoid micropony issues.

Agreed about the potting.

I don't know if it'll apply to secondhand pickups, but you might be able to get them fitted for free:

Quote
Can covers be added or removed from a humbucker? We remove covers free of charge as part of our commitment to customer service so that your warranty isn't invalidated as long as the pickup is returned to us by registered mail. A cover can be added to any Bare Knuckle humbucker and we only charge the cost of the covers, fitting is free.

i can say from my own experience that free cover fitting doesn't apply to 2nd hand pickups... just the original purchaser

Ahh, didn't realise it had to be wax potted. The seller had said that they could solder the original nickel cover back on if desired, I guess that means they already removed it, so even if I could persuade to get the seller to send it to Tim to get a gold cover fitted before I bought it, is that even possible now that the warranty is void?

I don't think removing covers causes any issues and as such I doubt it voids the waranty - But I have no idea.

But putting them back on without wax potting certainly will,  You can't just stick a slab of metal infront of a magnet without preperation :P ,

That being said, if he's the original buyer, I'm sure Tim will help him out, but it does seem a bit of a slap in the face to send back for a free service with the sole incentive of selling it - But leave the moral issues aside I guess.

Yeah that's a good point, it would be abusing the great service Tim offers a bit wouldn't it. Although the new £20 cover to be fitted would be being bought from Tim so i guess it's just a matter of principle.

I think i'm getting way ahead of myself anyways, I should probably wait until I can play well enough to justify something like BKPs.
