Gibson 57 Classics - your opinions please
« on: March 23, 2008, 10:20:23 PM »
I've recently taken a set of 57 classics out of my 335 and replaced them with a SD Jazzn and 59b. I'm now selling them on ebay and I'm surprised at the attention they're getting. They're also pretty expensive new. I honestly didn't think they were that amazing. What do you chaps think?

you're asking this on the BKP forum - what kind of response are you expecting?

the Duncan 59, Jazz and Gibson '57s are all popular pickups, but not in the same league as BKPs (I've used all three of those pickups).

get some Mules or Stormy Mondays and you'll be amazed (personally I'd go with SM's in a 335)

Well, having just fitted BKP PG's to my Les Paul this had occurred to me - the difference in quality and balance is staggering.  I just wanted reassurance that I hadn't ripped perfectly good pickups out of my 335. The 57's just didn't stand out at all to me, no character to speak of.

For the record, I like 'em.

On the other hand I think this thread isn't very fitting for this forum, given who pays for the bandwidth.  Maybe out of courtesy you'd like to delete this thread, fbloke???

Do you think on a forum about pickups there will be no discussion of other manufacturers Twinfan?  I'm a recent BKP customer and no doubt will be in the future. If you bother to read the previous post you'll notice how complimentary I was about BKP PG's and how I'd thought about BKP's in my 335.   Relax already.

Of course we often discuss other brands of pickups for comparison, but topics in the Pickups forum are meant to be "about" BKPs in particular.  If we're specifically discussing other brands it's better placed in Guitars, Amps and Effects or Time Out, perhaps.

Anyway. since we're here, from my limited experience of them, I'd say the '57 Classics are the best Gibson pickups I've heard.  The Duncan Jazz and BKP Stormy Monday probably have more clarity, but I find the Jazz too thin.  The SM is sweeter.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

When I sold off my original Joe Barden Strat Deluxe pickups, I was amazed at what they sold for.

And for what they are, they are very good.

However, after playing BKs I've become a convert to true single coil pickups.

Don't worry too much about what market value dictates. Just enjoy the extra cashola!!!

When I sold my Barden Two/Tone, I was expecting big bucks but only got one bid and it went for 35 quid.

Typical of me to get in after the market crashed.

Welllll...
I didn't like the ones in my SG supreme. Rough, they were.

I think that was the point I was trying to make (late last night, brain not working properly etc).  Thanks, as always, for being the voice of reason Phil!

fbloke - I wasn't having a dig at you, just trying to be polite.  Apologies.

Let love and peace be the answer.  I will stick to discussions about BKP's only from now on.  Happy Easter everybody.

Shame to lose you fbloke.  This forum is a great place and very open.

Free speech is fine here, as are comparisons of BKPs with other pickups.  But to specifically start a thread to discuss the merits of another (rival?) manufacturer's product is not really in the spirit of things.

O.K., I'm starting to cool off now.  Twinfan, you sound like a gentleman and I respect your positive intentions.  Let me finish this post with a summary that takes care of all that went before:

I wonder if I should have put Stormy Mondays in my 335?!!  The stock pickups didn't really light my fire. I have a sneaking suspicion that having fitted the BKP PG's in my Les Paul everything will sound second rate by comparison because the PG's really are fantastic.  Right, I'm off to my anger management class.

Standard convention dictates that SMs are superb in 335 type guitars.  There may be a clip or too if you search the 'players' section of the forum  :D

I have a set of unpotted AII Stormy Monday's in my 335 and they sound great, everything from BB King to Crossroads is available.  The unpotted sound a little more open and I don't have any problem with squeal from them (they are aged nickel covered).
So many pickups, so little time

That is, of course the big problem with BKP. :)
