Fuzz Pedal advice
« on: March 26, 2008, 03:17:01 PM »
I bought some pedals over the last few months as I decided do away with the multi fx and so far have a Blackstar Dual, Fulltone FD2 10th Anniv and a Holy Grail reverb.

Im looking at getting more pedals. I think my first bet is to get a decent delay and am almost set on the TC Nova Delay. Recent posts are incouraging and i like the sounds so will try it out this weekend.

I am less sure on what Fuzz to get. Im really into old school rock. My fav's are Hendrix, Clapton and John Fruscianti. The Fuzz faces are good pedals but limited in sound and over priced. I was thinking about either the Fulltone Fuzzes, MI Audio Geo or Zvex Vextor.

There are very mixed reviews of these pedals so would appreciated your opinions if you have had experience with them or suggest other makes ive not thought of.

Thanks

DeanS

Not that I use much fuzz- but I have a Fuzz factory which can pretty much emulate any fuzz type and beyond.

Take a look at the Brit Face by Alan Exley http://www.projectguitarparts.co.uk/Pages/burfordfx.html.  I have a few of his pedals and they are great (and not expensive).  I have the predecessor to this (the Razza Fuzz) and the Electron Grid.  The Mosquito looks like it should be great too.
So many pickups, so little time

if you want a germanium fuzz face type pedal - then this is, in my view the best on the market:

http://gundrymedia.typepad.com/throbak_electronics/2005/08/fuzz_haze.html

I bought one as a replacement for my cr@pped out original Arbiter fuzz face bought in a car boot sale in a church in Lewisham in 1991 and it is instant 60s - instant Jimi - and in a a small box with an LED and a pre-gain switch
BKPS: Milks, P90s, Apaches, Mississippi Queens, Mules, PG Blues, BG FP 50s, e.60s strat custom set

D*A*M Drag'n'Fly - a great "all-rounder" type fuzz.

I know V&R had a few in last time I was down there, but they've also started running waiting lists for buying direct from the factory. They do take a while for them to build, they're a low output make, but the stuff they do make is superb! :)[/url]

BKP's: Black Dog set, Emerald set, & Crawler set.

When you think fuzz think Hendrix and Stoner Doom.  When you think distortion think (most) Speed, Thrash, Death, and Black Metal.

EDIT:  I second DAM pedals
BKPz: Nailbomb+VHII, more to come...

I'm a massive fan of Skreddy. A friend of mine owns two of his pedals, and they're unbelievable. I'm saving to get all three of his current models together :D

Marc is super-helpful and nice to chat to, and he's willing to give you advice, and he definitely knows his stuff. He's to pedals what Tim is to pickups
BKPs (soon): CS, TS.

Redwitch are supposed to be good. Thing is this boutique market is  saturated with options. Your best off going to a shop and trying them out.

I just did that with a compressor and found a ffing gem of a pedal in Denmark St.

Hell yeah he is! He rushed through an order for me when I told him I was in New York at the time and wanted to collect it rather than having it sent internationally so he did it quickly and posted it to a friend of mine whom I was staying with. I'd give him 24 out of 10 for customer service.

I have a Mudhoney, Without the boost switched in it's a mild overdrive, kind've like a tubescreamer without the mid-hump, very smooth sounding. Not as much gain as a Keeley TS.

When the boost is on everything fattens up, lots of low end is added on. The top end is slightly fuzzy, but i wouldn't call it a fuzz pedal, more like a really meaty distortion.
