Spacing...Leg...I'm doing something wrong.
« on: March 29, 2008, 07:12:08 PM »
So I'm trying to figure out what I need to fill out before I buy the Rebel Yell pickups. I already know I'm going with the 4 Conductor and Chrome cover, but even reading the FAQs and such for Spacing and Leg, I have no idea what's going on.

Spacing I at least understand what it is, but when I measure I get something like 51.5 mm, which confuses me greatly. I've got an Epiphone Elitist SG, if that helps at all. Leg, however, I don't even know what it is. The FAQ talks about Gibsons having a 1/2'' leg, so I figure Epiphone can't be too far off, but then it says that slimmer bodied guitars have 1/4'', and my Elitist is the definition of slim bodied. How do I measure leg?

the legs are the tabs underneath the pickup that the screws go through - if in doubt just go for the short ones

+1, the pickup would have to sit VERY proud of the mounting ring for short legs not to work (& even then you can cut down the spring).

Regarding spacing, are you measuring the distance between top & bottom string over the bridge pickup[/url]?  If you are getting 51.5mm at that point then either 50 or 53 spacing would line up.  I'd got for 53 but it will make a negligible difference...
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

If uncertain go for short legs. I think would only be for thick bodies (Les Pauls?) or capped bodies, i.e. Maple and stuff (again Les Pauls?)

But go for short. Spacing is more the bridge pickup, for a Floyd Rose, the spacing is 53mm. Whereas it's usually 50mm.

I hope I'm correct in all that.

+1, I'd go for short legs for the reasons given.  Plus with short legs, the springs end up more compressed so the pickups sit more firmly in place.

And you could go for either polepiece spacing - I usually get 50mm unless the string spacing at the bridge is really wide (i.e. Floyd or vintage Fender style bridge).

Whilst we're talking legs, I noticed today that you can't (in the shop) specify leg length for the Mississippi Queen.  Anyone know which leg it comes with?
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Sounds like short legs and 50mm spacing is the way to go. Thanks everybody!
