Sorry - just had a "Les Paul" moment...
« on: March 30, 2008, 06:52:49 PM »
So, I've just got back from visiting my sister and brother in law with the wife and kids - usual format, a spot of lunch, some small talk then disappearing upstairs with him to check out his new "aquisitions".

My brother in law is in the American military, and gets guitars and amps very, VERY cheap from all around the world.

3 LPs, 2 were new (cost about £900 each in the States).  One of these was nice, and played really well.  Sounded great.  The other one I couldn't get on with at all, although it had a beautiful translucent cherry finish - probably the most beautiful guitar I've seen.  They both sounded really great, but this second one just felt really hard to play.

But the third... my word!  It was a Goldtop Les Paul Deluxe, he thinks from the 1970's.  Two small humbuckers, or possibly single coils.  This thing had dents, dings, chips, lord knows what all over it, a brass nut, missing scratch plate, replacement Grovers, chunks out of the neck, you name it.  But it played like an absolute DREAM!  It was clearly a well used machine, and I think well loved.  It was set up beautifully, I've never played a guitar with such a low action (except maybe an Ibanez once...), and the tone was amazing - really cutting and powerful.  I think that he picked that up for a thousand dollars or something...

I've never been much into LPs, but that Deluxe has totally convinced me that I probably need to have a good look around for the right one...

He had also picked up an old Anniversary Strat, which had one of the chubbiest necks I've ever played.  I HATED it after playing the LPs, but after a little noodling, I rolled back the volume a little on the neck PUP and it just sounded soooo good...

Mark.

Nice brother-in-law!

I have yet to have any relatives who play guitar.

A Les Paul is definately in sights for purchasing, hehe.

The right Les Paul is certainly going to put a smile on the face of the person that finds it.

I know some people don't like the fact that the several same model Les Paul's can be so different from each other but for me, that's part of the appeal.

I enjoy trying lots of different LP's and it's been a long time since I found one that I really didn't like playing. I would seriously consider buying a new Gibson LP, without seeing it, these days - if it was a reputable online shop with a return policy.

^ I'm one of those people who doesn't like the fact they can be so different!

I've played many LPs -  9 or 10 Standards (some of which were great, the worst of which I wouldn't have given house room to for half the ticket price), and a Custom Shop Jimmy Page Sig, but the best one ever was a late-ish '70s (about '77 I believe) LP Custom Black Beauty that a friend of my dad has owned from new. It had that sound, and played fantastically. Only problems were it weighed a ton and it wasn't for sale!

It's wierd - the variation confuses me.

If it was MY money, I think that rather than 1.5k in a shop I'd speak to a decent luthier and get one made for me.  Might cost a few quid more, but at least you're getting what you want, right?

By the way - this is the same brother in law that sold me the Orange 15 years ago for about £300...  Yeah, top bloke!!!

I was looking for a white Gibson custom a bit back, but the only one I could find was the 68 Reissue, the other one has weight relieved holes.
On eBay they go for more than a custom built :?
There seems to be some LP love at the moment!

TBH, a few months ago I was in love with the idea of getting a real LP - I already have an Epi. But after playing many and being disappointed with a fair few (especially considering the price tag) I've been put off. I'm holding out for PRS SC245 with a wide-thin neck.

I was looking at this earlier:

http://www.guitarvillage.co.uk/product-detail.asp?id=6214

My tele weighs about 7lbs This LP from the 70s weighs 10.8lbs. I know they vary quite a lot but what is a normal weight for a LP (if there is such a thing)
I think I hate being indecisive.

Based on the highly scientific method of 'blood flow to foot when played sitting down', I'd say about 8.5 to 9.5lb would be about 'normal' for modern LPs. However, the Custom I played was of a very similar vintage to the one you linked to, and that weighed 11.5lbs - we actually weighed it.

I've played Epiphones, Tokais and Gibsons (haven't tried Edwards or anything)

And my list of 'liking' goes as such:

1. Gibson MIA (Les Paul Classic!)
2. Epiphone MIC (Les Paul Standard)
3. Tokai MIC (Les Paul Standards and Studios)

I'm tempted by Tokai ones on eBays Stores, since they're MIJ

But the Gibson LP Classic in my guitar shop is a must-buy if I ever get the money. I'm also tempted to ask if they would bring down the Les Paul Supreme they have hanging up at the very top behind the counter. It's a red beauty.
