Anybody else got a Fender Champion 600?
« on: April 01, 2008, 09:32:48 PM »
Its my first valve amp. Im loving the improvement over my Marshall MG30dfx, which ive never really thought much of (or any other amp ive owned to be honest).

How much of a volume difference would there be if i played it through a bigger cab? Im wary of annoying neighbours.. hehe.

anybody had any experience with a different tube in it? is it worth doing?

I have one - and have done lots of work on it.

Tubes
If you have a no name 12AX7 get rid of it immediately - any replacement is good but a 5751 is the best replacement.
If you have the Electro Harmonix 6V6 keep it but a Brimar 6V6 from Watford Valves is a good improvement.  If its no name replace it.

The speaker needs wearing in big time.   You can get a Jensen Chicago 6" speaker at TAD
http://www.tubeampdoctor.com/index.php?cPath=37_39_66

Its a big improvement - the MOD 6 is OK but not as good as the Chicago.

As to a bigger cab - I play mine through 1x12 with a Jensen C12N and it sounds bigger and fuller buit not extremely louder.

If you want soundclips of the bigger speaker compared to the 6" PM with your email and i'll send you some.

I've used mine through a 1x12 and it wasn't really any louder, just better.

It's always sounded great clean, but the built in 6" speaker quickly reached it's limits when you turn it up. A 1x12 sorts this out, and shows you just what this wee amp is capable of :)

Strangely they come with either good quality Electro Harmonix tubes (they say so on the glass), Groove Tubes (also on the glass) or low grade Chinese tubes.  If they are not EH or GT then they are no name low quality Shanguang factory Chinese - only good for recycling.

The BEST upgrade is to get a 1x12 - you get pure high grade champ tone from this baby that can take distortion pedals.  The Jensen 12" Chicago is a goodish speaker at 4 ohm but the output transformer can easily take an 8ohm speaker, so almost any after market speaker will do.

The next best mod is turn your guitar volume to 8-9 = this allows you to use the 6" without farting - I know it sounds crazy but it was a trick used in the 50s and beyond.

Also the felt speaker grill is very tough - shaving it very gently on the otherside works a treat - now I am entering into the realm of the sad....

for the cost which isn't much get yourself a NOS Mullard ECC83 and an RCA 6V6.
Make sure they are geniuine NOS as these great old brands names are being re-issued now and are usually not that good. If you don't want to strecth to those then the JJ's are generally nice quality, especially the Gold pinned ECC83's
good luck but overall You'll enjoy the amp.
By the way there is a guy on ebay who sells mod kits for these amps which really do work...not me so this isn't a spam.
till the next time..........

I own the champ 600 myself and love it, haven't even modded it and it sounds great, any italian made Jensen would make it sound better, but is it what you need for more volume? I personally find it extremley loud, more than loud enough to be used in most situations, but I am unusual.

don't own one but friends sounded better with the jensen c12k than the c12n....the k is 100w but quite a sensative speaker works well with small amps

sorry, people have misunderstood my reason for the volume question here.

the amp is perfectly loud as it is. what i wanted to know was if i add a cabinet, will it get me an asbo for noise nuisance?

i DON'T want it to be louder. it was a question of whether it sounds better. thanks for the replies peeps :)

if you want to keep the volume down with a 1x12 cab, make sure you fit it with a speaker with a lowish sensitivity/efficiency.

I've got one -  I chaned the valves, cabinet, speaker and added reverb and changed the curcuit.

Now I've got a fender Twin Reverb

I meant 'Circuit' BTW.  That's pretty poor from an Electrical Engineer,  blame it on the Friday booze :?
