Should I sell with or without BKPs???
« on: April 03, 2008, 01:14:33 PM »
Folks

Just bought another guitar which will probably mean that I will be selling my Greco PRS-alike. Question is what should I do about the pickups? It has a set of nearly-new BKP Abraxas pups in there. I am looking to get the most £££ out of the deal(s). Should I:

1.   Sell guitar with BKPs as is?
2.   Buy some generic/2nd hand pups and swap them out?

If I go for (2) then I will probably get the Abraxas pups modified – spacing is correct but I’d want to get the gold covers removed as they would like $hite on the new guitar. Black open coils needed – any ideas as to how much Tim charges for this mod?

As usual, all ideas etc welcomed - thanks

i would sell the pickups seperately

everytime ive sold a guitar with good pickups in ive never been given more than youd get with cr@p pickups in.

Music stores are especially bad for this.

I think the best bet is always to put the original pickups back in (but it sounds like you don't have them?).

I think most buyers - myself included - aren't interested in previous owners' upgrades.  If they're collectors, they'd rather have the original parts, and if they're modders they'd rather do their own mods.

I (nearly) always keep the original parts of my guitars just in case I end up selling them.  Although a couple of times I've been caught out when I thought "I'll never sell this one" and sold the parts - then decided to sell it anyway.

As for getting the covers removed, I think that's free of charge if you're the original purchaser - it's in the FAQs on the site.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Thanks, Phil - as you might guess I thinking about that Ibanez that I bought - many need some creative financing! The Greco came with dreadful pups - I would be embarrassed to fit them again to sell it. On the look out for some Fender-spaced 'buckers....

Sorry I can't help out, I had quite a few old Duncan, DiMarzio and Gibson pickups but I've sold all the unwanted ones recently.
If you've still got the Greco pickups, I'd put them back in even if they are rubbish.  Even if you can get some decent replacements cheap, I don't think they'll add their own value to the value of the guitar.

Phil - this is what it came with - I flogged them on eBay because I intended to  keep the guitar...

Finding cheap F-spaced pups is proving tough - I can go for some generics from Axes R Us but I am looking out for some other options at present

I have boxes full of secondhand pickups - that have all been wax dipped by myself to get rid of the microphonics that they would otherwise have.
Many of them actually sound great once you get rid of the squeeling that was their original fault (but not as good as BKPs)

Loads of Duncan, Epiphone Gibson Jackson, Fender etc etc

Certainly good enough to put in a back up guitar or one you are putting on ebay to shift

I must get round to doing the ebay thing

that's what i'd have thought. i know if i were to buy something, if i could get the upgraded pickup version for the same price as the one with stock, i'd think i'd got a deal- but i wouldn't pay any extra for an "upgrade" i wouldn't make myself.

I'm pretty sure you'll get a far better deal selling the Abraxas pups on their own.

I'd reckon they would go for between £120 - £140 easy.

I'd take the BK's out, unless you find a buyer who knows the product they won't be willing to spend extra to cover the upgrade.

A practicle examle of this (I think), I recently bought a Fender Custom Shop strat from sounds great (used), it had Irish Tours fitted, but the description didn't mention that it also came with the original pups. When I talked to the guy at Sounds Great he said that they'd recently dropped the price by £300 because it hadn't sold, and I'll bet if it had original pups in it it would have. Personally I nearly blew a gasket when I saw it had IT's fitted because I knew what that meant, and I'd have paid the original price for it. :)

Thanks guys - I will look out for some pups then! I will keep the BKPs and decide on them once the Ibanez arrives.  Jonathan.... anything in your bargain bucket that you want to get rid of... ??? :-)
