What's this??
« on: April 04, 2008, 09:14:14 AM »
I have been looking around on ebay for a cheap guitar to rebuild and I ran across this. Notice the Gibson truss rod cover and the Epiphone headstock signature. Didn't really know what to think about it.

It is intriguing. I wish he would have posted more info though. Pickups, wood, etc. Nonetheless, it is an attractive guitar. I don't think he is shipping overseas though.

I believe they made that in the early 90's when everybody was making strat copies.

i believe when epiphone first started to do cheaper guitars they were called "epiphone by gibson" and often featured bolt-on explorer type necks.

I've seen Vs and teles quite a few times, but never a strat, though it stands to reason they would have built one.

That's new to me. I have never seen a Strat style body made by Epiphone/Gibson. Any idea what the body is made of? I am guessing the pickups are cheap single coils. Those would be replaced anyway. Just curious as of the build.

They were early '90s I think, made in Korea.

I can't remember much about them, but they were budget models, no more than £200 new (possibly even a lot less than that).  Pretty sure the bodies are plywood, and the Explorer-style headstock isn't ideal for use with a trem.

I have a mental image of Rockers in Denmark St displaying them in their window - I think they came in black, red or white.

Yeah, I kind of figured they were  budget model Strats. Needless to say, I don't need any plywood Strats laying around the house.
