Need a Slash? Which pick up to get close to my hero's tone?
« on: April 06, 2008, 12:10:40 PM »
Hello everybody. I have a Les Paul copy- a Vintage V100 icon- and want to upgrade the pickups to get closer to Slash's tone. Think Appetite and Illusion   days... not necessarily his new stuff as he has changes his tuning and string guage...

I know his sig Les Pauls all have the Duncan Alnico 11.
Im gonna be loyal to BareKnuckle tho cos my MM is fantastic...

Im thinking maybe a PG Blues with the Alnico 11...
Or the Mule just cos its based on the PAF...

Ill contact Tim for sure but Im open to suggestions before I contact the main man...

Cheers. Rich.

I've got Mules in my Les Paul and a Marshall Silver Jubilee head. The first time I fired it up in a big hall and played the intro the Sweet Child o' Mine, the bassist said "Yep, that's the tone, isn't it?"
Bare Knuckles owned: Mules, VHII, Rebel Yells, BKP-91, Strat 63 set, Riff Raffs.

+ 1 for the Alnico II Stormy Mondays, especially as the absence of the permanent neck / bridge phase cencellation ( as found in the P.G. set ) - will allow the 'usual' range of Gibson toggle switch options/ sounds from your Les Paul.

The only caveat is that the Stormys sound brighter in a maple top Les paul than an all mahogany guitar, so you might want to consult with the mighty Tim to be extra sure. I am not sure if the P.G. set are wound darker ? Mine currently reside in an S.G. Standard and they are very sweet and smooth if I roll the neck P/U tone back a bit - without any loss of clarity.

Do remember that I usually play very clean, so if the Stormys are driven through a mid rangey overdrive or driven amp, I can imagine the bright but rounded tones will balance nicely.

Meanwhile there is a good demo of Stormys in a Les paul on 'You Tube' done by one of the chaps here - and the part where the neck pickup is used to play bluesy sounds lovely.

I am a real convert to the Alnico II sound as heard in the S.M. pickups .  :D

A bit of a sidetrack, but what is your opinion of that Vintage V100 Icon?

I myself have been pondering over the Vintage V100 and their SG series for some time, and despite them being in the same city as me there isn't anywhere loacal where i can try them out!

I have tried a Vintage Peter Green les paul model and that was fantastic, got me wondering weather the V100 would be pretty good too...

You have to remember Chappers is an amazing player so he can make anything sound good. But i myself have looked at it before and pondered whether it was worth a try.

What's your budget?

I've heard a few good demos using the Marshall AVT 20 combo.  Not bad for the price.

Hello again Rich,

Just to say that if your proposed guitar is all mahogany, the AII Stormy Mondays will be dark enough.

I have mine in an old S.G. Standard - and the sound ( albeit clear ) is quite  Jazzy. If I further select the neck pickup and roll the tone back to 6 or 7 - it sounds really fat and sweet. As Tim once said, in an all mahogany guitar you either need something very low output with which you can 'hear the wood' - or something so stunningly high powered that it can drive through the dampening effect of a slab of mahogany.

When I told him I had a set of AIV Mules and a set of AII SMs ( but felt I was spoilt for choice as to which guitar they  should inhabit ) - he said SMs to the solid S.G. and Mules to the 'capped' Les Paul.  He was spot on as usual !

The pair of Alnico II SMs in my S.G. are much darker sounding than the same set in my mahogany/maple capped Les Paul - even though the Les Paul ( seems to ) weigh twice as much !

I am therefore ever more convinced that it's the AII SMs for you Slasher !

For a cheap amp I'd recommend an Orange TT or even the Matamp Little Rock.

These are both less than £300 RRP and will sound great at practice volumes whilst still being able to handle a small to medium sized gig.

I'd opt for the TT if you want the sound of a modded Marshall as it is kind of in that ballpark at crunch to medium distortion.

Do NOT be set on a brand; Look for a sound, as the shop manager said to me. Then again: he was synaesthetic...
I too use chicken as a measurement.
