Questions about Spacing and legs
« on: April 08, 2008, 01:32:05 PM »
Hey guys,

Got a doubt I hope you can solve.

I'm going to get 3 sets of pickups for my 3 guitars.

Esp Explorer - Rebel Yell
Caparison Angelus - Miracle Man
BC Rich Mockinbird - Nailbomb.

As far as I know, I would need:

53mm for trem spaced guitars... (like mockingbird)
50mm for fixed bridge guitars like Explorer and Caparison Angelus

Andfor the legs:

Caparison-short leg
BC and Explorer -long leg

Now my doubt:

Does it means that if I buy a Nailbomb set for the Mockingbird (53mm. + long leg), I wont be able to change it in a future and put them in the Caparison Angelus ?? ( that would need a 50mm + short leg) ??

I ask this cause it may be a possibility to exchange pickups in a future, to compare sounds with different guitars,  and well,  just need to know if that is possible, OR NOT !!!

No more,

Thank you all for your help ;).

Ben.

The main problem you will have is the leg length.  A long leg pickup will not fit into a guitar with a shallow route.

The pickup spacing will work in a different type of guiar, but it just won't be ideal.

Probably, but it would be better to be certain.  Measure the distance between your top & bottom strings over the bridge pickup pole pieces, choose whichever spacing will line up best.

It's quite common for the string slots on tune-o-matic bridges to be cut slightly wider - I wouldn't be surprised if all 3 guitars needed 53mm...

As for leg length, the long leg is the length Gibson always used, but unless the pickup sits very proud of the mounting bezel, then short leg will fit almost anything.
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

I would always go for short leg, so in a shallow routed guitar it would be good. But in a deep routed one, it would still fit.

Thanks for the advises..

I've meassured my guitars and:

ESP Explorer... 51.5mm.
Mockinbird:      53mm.
Caparison Angelus (I have have the guitar yet, is on its way home from Japan.. will arrived in 1 week or so).

What should I get for the 51.5 ?  the 50mm. ? or the 53mm. ??

Short leg for all guitars ?

You could go either way.  The E strings will be above the first and sixth polepieces, but with 53mm they'll be closer to the inner edges of the poles, with 50mm they'll be closer to the outer edges of the poles.

I have both spacings, but I prefer 50mm because when I bend strings it pushes them closer to the centre of the polepieces, rather than further away.  That's my theory anyway.  But it doesn't make a huge difference.

And I'd go for short legs on all the pickups.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Wooh...

Thanks god I checked it...

I've found in some forums and I ead a guy who own an Angelus HGS pro trans black, that:

The Angelus HGS Trans Black Matte is indeed, "F" Spaced.. !!!

So, I guess I will have to buy the MM with 53mm.. as well... ???

(sadly, I dont have the guitar at this moment, still waiting for it to arrives (in about 2 weeks), but I need to make the order now, so I will have to trust him... and get the 53mm.

So, about the legs, I guess the safetest would be to get all in SHOT LEGS, so it can fit all my guitars... (althuogh the spacing wouldnt be the same...)

What do you think ?
