OK, it's guitar related but not to do with specific guitars or anything so I guess it goes in the Time Out.

This issue about returning items, i.e. guitars, amplifiers, cabs, etc.

Why is it such a bother? Well, I can't really say I'm "pro-buy stuff online and it doesn't matter if you have to return it", as I've only returned a small phone memory card.

But if you bought a guitar and/or amp, etc. and it wasn't the right one or it was faulty and you returned it (specifically, to the store you bought it from, not from someone one-off such as eBay. I mean an actual shop with online shopping)

What's the big deal? I'm patient. I can wait.

What brought me to this annoying rant/question was because I asked my dad if he could order through a guitar or amp from a shop online.

Would a shop's existence not mean that it is reliable? And that he SHOULD try to provide good customer service? Unless otherwise stated. I know there can be some dodgy people out there but the majority its all OK.

First his reasoning was that he didn't want to fork over too much money (via credit card) over the Internet. So I found something else that was reasonable - yet he still said he didn't want to. The fact it being the Internet this time. He's like the guy who would ask "What's text messaging?"

Plus I think to some degree it is highly unlikely for credit card fraud. But that statement is just me grabbing something out the air.

I guess this is just a rant. :?

My parents are highly difficult, and I haven't asked them to do anything in several years really, the last big hassle was driving test booking.

Just email the shop and ask to send a bankers draft or something, I have done that before

My father also will not put trust the internet, and pulls a made up statistic out of the air about fraud etc very irritating.

and... well if you are just asking for a prezzie, and its his money... get a joooob :P

My mother and father-in-law both refuse to buy online as they don't trust online shopping.  They'd rather pay more in a shop.  OK, I guess as they're old skool.

But my father-in-law uses eBay a LOT and pays by PayPal for everything.

Duh????????

What do you do with a banker's draft?

I don't have a current account though. So I guess that won't work.

Only a savings. And I am 18.

My parents like to confine me in a little box and not let me do anything. :?

Not necessarily.

These days I never buy online from a website that doesn't indicate the stock level of the items.  In fact, I'd prefer not to buy anything that wasn't in stock & couldn't be sent to me same day.

Basically, I had a bad experience - the firm went bust in between taking my order (charging my card) & getting/shipping the item.  Luckily it was only £35 but I've still not got the money credited back.  It certainly made me think about buying online.  It could have been, say, £1000 - then it would have really hurt

You probably don't even need a fiver to get started these days...

Yet the same people will happily call up someone they have never met to buy something over the phone and hand out their credit card with complete confidence!!!. No logic eh?

it was similar with my family - mind i'm likely alot older than you, and e-commerce was in its infancy in the late 90s, they were very agressive and opposed.

my parents only started to use the internet for buying stuff when they realised it was by far the best way to get the specialist books etc they were interested in.

i was shocked when i went to see my family the other week, even my mum was using it...

Your card details are much more at risk if you use the card in a corner shop or a semi-independant garage than if you use the secure checkout of a respectable internet trader.
people have this strange idea that internet fraud is all about hackers and theft of information from systems, whereas the truth is that the bulk of it is people being duped into handing over their details to bogus sites.
