Custom Guitar, Cleans on a coil-tapped Nailbomb bridge?
« on: April 17, 2008, 05:05:36 AM »
Is it possible?

I've gone through most every single guitar manufacturer's catalogs and cannot find anything that appeals to me, as I am incredibly picky, so I guess I'll try going custom.

I'm totally digging the thought of having a nailbomb in the bridge and a sustainiac in the neck, but from what I've heard the sustainaic nor the fernandes sustainer is of any competent use for cleans.

I don't know that much about guitar tech, but the Nailbomb seems to be bare knuckle wonderchild, and am curious if by coil tapping the bridge it there's any chance I can get some nice cleans, or at least clean enough to cover it with with some eq/reverb.

-Thanks

The untapped Nailbomb bridge humbucker has a nice clean sound anyway - I don't think it's necessary to split it.  It's a very versatile pickup.

I have the splitting option in my PRS, but rarely use it - split NB sounds OK, but I've never really been a strat fan...

Also - what woods, construction & body style would you have in a custom guitar?  That would influence whether Nailbomb was really the best choice...

I have a nailbomb set and think that the bridge humbucker is too powerful for good cleans (the neck is awesome for that). when split it does come close to a strat bridge sound (piercing!).
If you're going custom why not use a true single coil pickup mounted right next to the Sustainiac?
that way you could use the bridge humbucker for riffage, the sustainiac for leads and the single coil for cleans.  8)

I split the coils in my Nailbomb equipped Charvel using a Schaller Megaswitch, which is supposed to give PRS style options.

Didn't use it much until my Orange got fixed, but now that baby has been repaired and I can crank it I LOVE the Stratty sounds that I can get.  Wonderful tones.

The schaller megaswitch P model (for PRS) doesn't have one split pup on its own. its three middle positions are inner coils in series and parallel, and outer coils in parallel with each other if I'm not mistaken.

+1 on the amazingness of the parallel coils sound. much twang  8)

because.......ugh............I'm a visual thinker with a very strong sense of aesthetics, and its going to be a tele-based guitar.....and it'd be a covered nailbomb bridge, as a chrome covers look kewl,  and ugh I don't think it'd look nice with something that look like an uncovered humbucker in the neck, and the thought of middle 3rd pickup on anything tele looks atroicous.

ok, just shoot me.

2nd, body would probably be alder, as from what I understand its really solid, certainly more dent-resistant than basswood, and just gives a decent all around tone.  I can't afford multiple guitars for different styles so it'd would have to be like my ideal lady, all you need is one.

From what I've seen I'm really itching to go Legra, I just feel like getting more specs down before bothering Mr. Bob Johson.
