Floyd Sadle problem. Please help. Sorry its lengthy
« on: April 17, 2008, 09:47:27 AM »
A whil ago i was given an old kramer focus 1000. Although its not great its a nice addition to my current guitars and i think fixing it up will help suppress my Ibanez Gas.

When i got it it was nackered. I took it to pieces, Clean and polished the floyd(an original), Re-wired it with a concentric pot(volume, tone) and a warpig  . fret polish body polish new strings and setup.

Its in good working order but the playability is shambolic!!

I think when i put the floyd rose back together i put the incorrect saddles back on. All the string are different heights. I get really Bad buzzing around the 7-10 frets and it wont go unless the action is super high.

I cant seem to remedy it ive tried all the saddles in different positions but once i get it set up its goes all wrong again. Ive also had to use new saddle as some of the originals snapped when screwing the string block in.

Should i get 6 new saddles, a new trem altogether or get a pro to check it.
I wont be able to afford another original floyd thats why i tried to clean off the old one. would a cheaper one work just as well?

The neck seems fine, in fact its suprisingly straight and the frets seem barely worn at all considering its age and condition.

Cheers all

Help is greatly appreciated :)

P.S. Do you think this guitar is worht the hassle?? Should i sell as spare and repairs?

do you get fret buzzing for all six strings? if you do it means it's nothing with saddles. they should be in the same shape as a neck radius. check if they are and swap them between if necessary. if this won't help it seems like your guitar need a proper set-up. neck relief adjustment might be required. also check if the bridge is balanced as this is crucial for floyd rose bridges.

Hey mate cheers for the reply.

Ive checked the neck and its very straight. checked with a 30" rule 15" rule and smaller checked for uneven frets and it was stright like an arrow.

I checked thoroughly when i first got the guitar coz i thought it was going to be worth loads or something!? lol

It doesnt buzz on all strings, mainly G and the two either side. Ive changed the saddles around alot, but some of the original ones broke. Do you think i should get a new set because the new ones might not correspond to the old ones?!

I believe a neck should ideally have some bow to it, so if its completely straight, you are likely to get more buzz.
Have you tried giving it a bit of relief?

Take all the saddles out again, and line them all up side by side on a flat surface. Look at them end on, and you should see the correct order they are meant to be placed on the bridge - they should follow the convex of the fingerboard i.e. low ones on the outside, slightly higher ones in the middle.
Also, when I last took my floyd apart, there was a metal shim which is meant to be placed under the four inner saddles. If yours had that, be sure to fit it back exactly where it was if it dropped out accidentally.

edit: Just read that you've replaced some of the saddles with other ones you've got elsewhere. In that case, a replacement set is probably your best option and should cure the problem.

i also think a replacement set would be the best. and as will said - neck shouldn't be straight. it needs some relief.

The neck was straight when i got it. It had no strings on it, after i restrung it i left for a few days gave it another set-up and i gave it abit of relief as the neck wasnt bending or taking to the tension from the being strung up. Ive got it setup nicely for the bottom two strings but the rest are plffff'ed.

I think ill save for a bit and get some saddle savers from WDmusic

Cheers for all the replies/help guys
