Cab issues - recommend new speakers please?
« on: April 17, 2008, 02:02:34 PM »
Hi,

I recently bought a cab which was second hand (Marshall TSL212) and it came with a problem. Basically the speakers seem to make this metallic echo sound when i suddenly stop playing and it is especially noticeable on the high gain settings...

Firstly does anyone know what the problem is? Im pretty sure the speakers are solidly screwed onto the cab because i check that... I have a suspicion the speakers are in need of a replacement...

The head i use with it is a Mesa F-50 and i use my Les Paul fitted with Miracle Men so obviously im big into metal but i do enjoy playing a lot of other styles too, such as clean soft rock and instramental rock...and Jazz fusion... (hence i went with the highly versatile F-50)

Could anyone recommend new speakers?

Thanks

Celestion Vintage 30's always seem popular, I have them in my cabs and like them. But I've not had experience of others so I'm not the best judge!

Let me find a link to my previous speaker exploits.

In summary, I use and recommend to anyone like-minded the following: 2 x EVM12L black label and 2 x Celestion G12K-100 in a cross pattern.

Link

Since doing those clips, these speakers have had tens of break-in sessions, and are now sounding really superb indeed. Absolute power and articulation, and the depth and breadth of the sound blows me away when I hear it cranked :) I'm so chuffed with these purchases!

I'm a big fan of the Celestion G12T Hot 100s.  Seriously good speakers for very little money.  Very highly recommended.

sounds like cone-I blew a ev12 and this is what it sounded like...very noticeable on cleans-the ev was covered under warranty  and the recone has stood the test of time and watts
I LOVE the big EV, but it isnt for everyone-it is bright and superpowerful...it will handle anything ..my fave for rock, metal, and cleans..but it is unforgiving-bad technique is not "covered up"!!eminence offers a clone that isnt as bright, and cheaper..but it is the real deal as well..the delta pro 12, I believe
-c90's are also a popular choice for all things boogie
(I have to play ev's..my Coliseum is a 6L6 beast at a conservative 180 watts  )

I'm with the same problem!
I had called to a hand-maker of amplis a Vox AC30 clone, but, as I'm still in the queue I'm thinking in ask a Marshall Plexi instead, with something near 30w (have hear that 50w is to much)...
In the vox I would go for alnico blue... but for plexi dunno... wanting the "traditional marshall plexi" tone... (or something that brings me AC/DC, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Zeppelin, etc)

Celestions seem to be very popular and are easily available - however, if you can give the Eminence Red Coat range a try then you will no be disappointed.

Thanks for the replies, i think i'm going to go for the Celestion Vintage 30s because i'm not able to try any speakers and they seem popular and therefore safe... (the cab is a 2x12)

Also, they seem relatively cheap...

http://www.bluearan.co.uk/menu/index.php?manufacturer=Eminence&masthead=Guitar_Speakers&subheadnew=12_inch_Drivers

Eminence are about £47-51 (Wizard, Governor, etc)

Celestions can't be much cheaper, can they?

You might want to at least find some clips comparing the V30s to other speakers. V30s have what some people describe as a mid-range hump. Personally, I'm not a fan of this, but others are, so you'll have to take each person's view as just that: an opinion. Best to hear these for yourself before diving in, I think.
Likewise with my suggestion above, if you like V30s, then what I suggested might not be for you (although personally I think the G12K-100 is the finest speaker in Celestion's range!).

Again, it's all opinions :)

I like the Eminence range - I have 2X12 G12H Anniversary cab and a Texas Heat 1x12 - The Texas Heat creams the G12H's to my ears.

Are you sure it's a speaker fault? I've had a similar problem where it was actually the strings ringing slightly behind the nut. Try damping them with a bit of cotton wool or something to see if the sound goes away? If so, you can come up with a more permanent method of damping them.
