Need ADVISE: Caparison ORBIT
« on: April 20, 2008, 09:56:45 AM »
Hi Guys,

While my 3 sets of pickups are being made, I ordered another guitar, a Caparison ORBIT, and need to hear your advises for pickups...

Here you have the guitar:

And its specs:

Body Material: Mahogany
Neck Material: Hard Maple
Neck Joint: Neck Through Body (so the hard maple goes all through into the mahogany body, off course :P)

The guitar will be tuned in C (standard C-C), and I play Death Melodic Metal... (like In Flames, Soilwork, Dark Tranquilllity, etc).

My question... which one do you think would be the best for the guitar and style ???

Painkiller ???.... Nailbomb ???  any other ???

What do you think for the neck... Trigoly suit ?? or Sinner ???

Thank you so much for your help, let's see if I can clear up my mind !!! (this is really HARD to choose...!!! I wish there were some neutral irfs of each pickups... (same guitar, same amp, same eq, and same riff with each guitar... that way we could really HEAR the real differences :( )

Thanks again

Ben.

For the In Flames tone I would recommend the Miracle Man.
My last FM.
ESP Horizon NTII.
ESP Viper Camo.
ENGL Screamer.

Ceramic Warpig for the bridge i would say, not sure about the neck pickup though, but it needs to be something out of the hotter single coil selection to match the CWP.
Black Dogs

Previous BKP's: Riff Raff, Holy Divers, Painkillers, C. Warpig, Nailbomb, Miracle Man.

I'd say Miracle Man or the Warpig.

I would disagree with the other chaps (sort of). Having played a friends Nailbomb-equipped Ibanez (mahogany bodied and maple-necked like your Caparison),  I would recommend the Nailbomb in the bridge. Totally nailed Soilwork's tone.

Although another friend of mine has a Dean V with a Warpig which does the job nicely, and I'm sure that would also get you in the right ballpark.

Neck-wise I have no idea as I'm not familiar with BK single-coils!

Thanks for your advises...

Well, Personally, I dont think the warpig is for me... I think it's a great pickups, but maybe it's too much saturated for my taste... too much fuzzz for me.

Nailbomb could be a great option... and that soildwork tone would be the one to seek...

Miracle man... ummm.. I've got that for my Caparison Angelus (I havent received the pickups yet, cause made the order the other day), but would be nice to try something different...

What would you say between the Nailbomb and the Painkiller ??

Based on your response to the comments here, I'd suggest that you send an e-mail to Tim aking his advice. My inclination would be ceramic warpig (or even alnico V warpig, given the more "death" nature of your target tone), but then I'm sure you could find a Nailbomb or Painkiller very interesting, too. Tim would be best placed to advise you, though - so off you go! And let us know what he says, too! :)

Thanks for your replies...

Yes, I asked Tim, just wanted to contrast his vision (the most important, due to he knows his stuff more than anyone), to the rest of you, (who more than sure are more METAL HEADS ;) )..

He recomended me the PAINKILLER ... 100% for sure :).

Well, I think I will simply follow his advises... ;)

Thanks again for everything !!! (I will post pics and try to record something when I receive and install them all)

Ben.

I'd say go with Painkiller. I put one in my old Kramer, and it's killer. I like the crisp, clear sound - the highs cut like a knife.
I've also got a Caparison TATII, and want to change the pickups. One thing to note though, is the mounting plate on the Caparisons are different to normal pickups - there's two screws on the left side and one on the right. I think you'd have to drill into the body and change the pickup surrounds for the one-a-side mounting screws to fit.
If Tim reads this - can you make pickups with the Caparison style mounting plate?

Yeah, I'll put a picture on here later - for now you can see it on the Orbit picture at the top in your post.
If you look closely, you can see two screws at the top above the bridge pickup, and just one at the bottom. I think this is the same for all Caparison humbuckers, and there's a thread or two about this on the Caparison forum.
Most people get around it by drilling an extra hole into the guitar (for the ones without pickup surrounds, like the Horus) or buying new pickup surrounds for the TATII/Orbit, but I'll be damned if I'm doing that to mine.

Well, I guess I will have to replace the pickup rings...

Anyone knows where can I find some good black rings ?? (they would be for the Caparison angelus, and for the Orbit) ???

Thanks !!!
