Video Nasties: The Definitive Guide

I've spent much of the last week working my way through this three-disc set.  It's a documentary about the moral panic which seized the nation at the dawn of the video age in the early '80s.  The other two discs include trailers for all 72 films on the Director of Public Prosecutions' official "banned list", introduced by various writers and academics.

Absolutely essential viewing - if you're into this kind of thing, that is, of course!
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds

I've just sat and watched (and I'm a bit ashamed to admit it tbh ) Zombie Strippers.

It really is as bad as it sounds!

Flesh eating virus that reanimates dead bodies gets released into an underground strip club.

As it turns out, the virus makes the strippers 'better', so the non zombies have the choice;

Get bitten, make money but be a zombie or stay human and be shunned by the paying public.

Yep, it really is as bad as it sounds!

Zombie Strippers is indeed as bad as it sounds!

I just watched 7 Days (Les 7 Jours du Talion): a respectable doctor kidnaps the killer of his young daughter, aiming to make the man suffer before killing him on the seventh day.  Meanwhile the police are trying to track him down before it's too late.  This is one of the bleakest films I've ever seen.... I can't say I enjoyed it, there's nothing to "enjoy", but it's powerful, thought provoking and emotionally draining!

(If anyone has seen The Tortured, starring "actor" Jesse Metcalfe, it's almost exactly the same story - for the first half, at least - but The Tortured is made by idiots, for idiots...)

I watched Eden Lake earlier on.

It's a british 'horror' film about a couple that go camping and have a run in with a group of young chavs.

It's actually alot better than I'm making it sound to be honest!

Well worth a look if you get the chance.

A Town Called Panic - I don't really know what to say... it's pretty nuts. A horse lives with a cowboy and an Indian. While trying to find out who is stealing their bricks leads them on a crazy, disjointed adventure from the-centre-of-the-Earth to the North Pole. The animation is low-tech but there is something captivating about it. There are some lovely ideas, the giant snowball throwing penguin piloted by ultra-aggressive scientists (yes, really!) for example. I'll need to watch it again and work out if I like it. In a world of beige this is a genuine oddity.

The Tourist - I thought this would be at least a bit better than it was. It was ok for a bit of fun but the chemistry between the two leads was cr@p and I predicted the ending as soon as Depp's character was introduced.

How to Train Your Dragon - A return to form by DreamWorks Animation, a poor and unoriginal story/plot but excellent visuals and action. It's not up to Pixar levels but much better than the recent Shrek movies.

I saw this last week and thought it was rubbish. Aside from being able to guess the twist right early one, you are basically told, directly, about the twist when they chat about the Janus bracelet Jolie wears.

Tried to compile my top ten films of this year for another forum earlier. Struggled. Eventually had a top five:

Valhalla Rising
Four Lions
Kick Ass
Machete
The Road

I got a few DVDs off my sister for Christmas so I've sat and watched those over the last day:

Predators - Good enough for some entertainment. Not a patch at all on the original and I prefer the 2nd 1 to it too. It is better, imo at least, than the 2 AVP films. This film suffers from the same thing as the AVPs in that it's been toned and watered down somewhat compared to the 1st 2.

Inception - Really good film and I enjoyed it. I'd heard a fair bit about it before hand that it was hard to follow etc but I didn't find it too bad. Some nice set pieces in it aswell as some decent action sequences as well as a good story. I think it's well worth watching.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon - One of the worst film I've seen in some time. The script is absolute rubbish, the acting is horrendous, the plot is terribly predictable, totally illogical, dull and drawn-out over two painful hours! Avoid at all cost, this is poison.

Family Guy Presents: It's A Trap - Third in the Star Wars tribute episodes from the Family Guy team. Disappointing, just not enough quality jokes. The art & design quality of the episode is great, the best of the 3 episodes. This doesn't disguise the feeling that they were just going-through-the-motions with this episode. The inclusion of characters from both American Dad and The Cleveland Show shows how much they were struggling. Family Guy fans will still enjoy it.

A Serbian Film.. I'm not really sure why me and my mates decided to watch this, but it was very, very wrong. Yet it was really well made with good dialogue in places, and nice lighting.

Dod Sno (Dead Snow in English) , Nazi zombies in Norway need I say more?  Very well done horror, splatter gore film.  Quite funny was well if you can find humor in zombie movies.

Did you see it uncut, Tom, or the BBFC certified version?

Watched five flicks yesterday.

Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) - As brilliant as always.

Rent - Not nearly as good, but still a top class musical. Most of the points it loses are for Mr Generic US Rock's tunes and the happy ending when it should have stayed miserable. I've still never seen a production of La Boheme, which I should really make a point of given how much I like Rent.

Cromwell - Alright, not as great as the cast might suggest. Dunno how accurate it is, my English history isn't amazing, but I don't think Cromwell was that important until mid way through the civil wars. Don't think the film could decide what angle they wanted to take so it kinda bounces about in feel a bit.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - Great.

Inception - Visually stunning in parts - Juno folding up Paris and the moving gravity hotel fight - but I expected from people's chat and reviews to be surprised over and over and taken on a merry ride, but it was pretty linear I thought. Still well worth a watch.

Yep it was the uncut version. I think I have an idea which scenes they'd probably take out!
