fitting a fixed bridge - which screws?
« on: April 24, 2008, 10:55:32 AM »
my instinct tells me to go for self-tapping screws into wood... and a "number 4" screw would fit perfectly. (number 6 are a little too big)

however the supplier of the bridge suggests fine threaded machine screws.

the bridge has six mounting screws and will be fitted into maple, 25.5" scale neck - if it makes a difference.

what type do people suggest for these screws? what sort of depth should i go for? any materials i should avoid?

I'd have thought you'd only want fine threaded machine screws if there were also threaded brass or steel inserts for them to screw into. :?

What type of bridge is it?  I'm surprised it isn't supplied with screws in the first place.

When I put Graph Tech saddles on my hardtail Strat, I had to change the bridge fixing screws because the old ones were getting in the way of the saddles.  I ended up using stainless steel strap button screws.

agreed regarding what you say about the inserts. its a handmilled fixed bridge for a steinberger by the way.

any problems with those strap button screws so far?

None at all, it's rock-solid.

The holes were a bit oversized so I filled them with superglue and baking soda then re-drilled.  The screws themselves are about the same size as the ones that come with Schaller straplocks.

the strap button screws are usually about the right size.... but why not just order the appropriate bridge screws instead!!
