single pickup for clean AND distortion?
« on: April 25, 2008, 02:05:54 PM »
hello,

I've got an old BC Rich Assassin with a single humbucker at the bridge and want to replace the current pickup.  it's some DiMarzio model and it's muddy as hell.

here are the specs of the guitar:

25.5" scale
neck-thru
mahogany neck and body wings
ebony fingerboard
Original Floyd Rose trem
single 500k volume pot - no tone

I play a lot of old metal, like Venom, Slayer, Metallica, Annihilator, King Diamond, Megadeth, etc.  I use a Marshall 6100LM half-stack.

I need something that can sound good on both clean tones and heavy distortion.  is this a possibility?  which Bare Knuckle models should I look into?

Many thanks..........Don

Holy Diver would be my first choice - more than enough grunt for the heaviest riffage, but still has a fantastic warm clean sound

A5 Warpig would be very good too - despite its massively high output, it actually has a good clean tone.

Nailbomb would be a popular choice, or if you can live with the ceramic "edge" in your clean tone, the Painkiller would work.
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

All of them.

Yes its most definitely a possibility. I've never heard a bad clean clip from BKPs, even the ones you wouldn't expect it from. (Warpig, Painkiller). I'd say make your decision based on the type of distorted sound you like and the good cleans will follow.

Cold Sweat will work really well in an Assassin.

It may not be what you are looking for but I remember puttinh a crawler in to    the bridge of a LP style guitar and being amazed at how sexy the clean was.

I probably wouldn't use a Nailbomb bridge for clean work, the neck is great, but the bridge is a little edgy IMO.

As ever.. ask Tim :)
