Okay, so I know he has a billion guitars, of which he uses all of them live, but if anyone has the vertigo DVD - live in chicago, or saw U2-3D, they'll know what i'm talking about.

i am ADDICTED to that tone. I will be getting a very very tasty LP (not gibson.. a navigator! :wink: ) in the not to distant future, and will load it with bareknuckles.

What do the educated masses prescribe?

It's important that your body has the right resonant peak, Robbo, so keep doing those situps. You'll never get the Edge's tone without the tonal qualities of mad abs.

I'd better start by saying I'm not a big fan of U2 and Edge's sound. Although, saying that, I did see them the week New Year's Day went to No 1 in the UK, pre-live aid etc - and they were pretty bluddy good! And I think I've got everything up until, er, the one after Rattle and Hum. Maybe I ought to get those old vinyl albums out, perhaps I am a fan after all!

Also I don't really understand what Edge does with guitars... all I know is that I can't do it (and I have tried over the years!). I can't say I'm that fond of it, but I am very intrigued by what he does.

Anyway, to answer your question: ignoring the effects etc, I'm fairly certain that my Mules would do a pretty good job of the tone on those clips.

(Curses... I'm probably going to have to digitise the old LPs, and start turning on the echo-machines again now... look wot you've done!!)

A big part of the Edge's tone comes from echo/delay and even more his fingers and style (droning notes).

As far as I know both his white Les Paul and Explorer are from around 1976 wich means they are most likely loaded with Dirty Finger pickups.

In BKP terms that means Cold Sweat pickups.

I'm sure that I read somewhere that he uses nylon picks and strikes the strings with the grip - I've tried this and you do get that rasping attack that he seems to get.

Politics and ego aside, I can't stop myself loving U2.

well after that, i did go to do some more crunches: i was doing heaps, and feeling really good about myself, then i realised my shoulders weren't moving... it was just my neck bobbing up and down  :D


so abs + cold sweats/mules hey? well i've always been interested in both of these, so i think i'll trial them both out before i get my guitar. any other contenders?

either that or t-tops (riif raff)... i'm not 100% sure, but i think the DF came out in 1978.
