Stormy Mondays in a 335 - the verdict
« on: April 30, 2008, 09:48:16 PM »
Just got some AII Stormy Mondays put into my 335, as a result of many of your recommendations on my previous post looking for a smoother, sweeter bridge pickup.

Absolutely breathtaking.  The natural tone of the 335 really came through, making it sound vintage and deep, yet clear and smooth.  The switch to AII magnets made all the difference and the quality of the pickup build is obvious.   Something else really stood out that I'd not really encountered in many years of playing guitar is how much my pick attack and pressure affects the tone.  I'd not really thought of myself as having a heavy right hand before, but when I lightened my touch a bit I was amazed at how well the tone balanced out.  I'm sure I haven't had this experience with stock Gibson's or Seymours to the same extent - has anyone else had this realisation?

Thanks for the post, but I may hate you for some time to come. I had just about managed to stop myself getting AII SM's for my Tokai 335, and you had to post this...

As to your experience with the picking, I think that is quite common, BK's seem to produce subtleties and harmonics that just don't come through with other pickups and I think that's what makes them so sensitive to how you play. I'm not an experienced player, but even I can spot it.

Dammit, I really want a set of SM's now... How much can you get for a kidney these days?

To quote Homer Simpson - "Hey!  I could just sell one of my livers!  I don't need two of those!"

With me it was a similar debate - " I don't need more gear, I've bought and sold enough over the years".  Problem is with BKP's, you know they are the best available and you know they will nail that tone in your head.  I feel like I've spent £ 190 to get a tone that would be comparable with a '62 335 - it's that good.  Cheap, don't you think? Maybe you could be thinking: "say hello to my leedle fren' Mr. Mastercard....."

Do it do it do it do it do it do it......

Homer is right! I don't need 2 of those!  :)

You've hit the nail on the head, while BK's are not cheap pickups, they aren't expensive for what you get out of them. My 335 is currently sat in it's case, where it has been for some time, because the tone compared to our other guitars is just disappointing, I have no urge to play what is a very good guitar. So £200ish is not a bad price.

I WILL do it, just a matter of when...

I put unpotted Stormy Mondays into my 335 and it sounds great.  It had T-top gibsons (it is a 1967), and so sounded pretty good anyway, but the sound with the SM's is perfect.  I say go for it (sorry for pushing you  :) ).

You can never have too many Bare Knuckles!!  I'm upgrading 2 guitars this weekend and trying out some new pickups that I haven't heard yet in another new build (I have heard great things about them though - they are Strat pickups).
So many pickups, so little time

Brilliant news Fbloke !

I have tried them in an S.G. /  Les paul - and one day would absolutely love a 335 to put them in.  As much as I treasure my Mules, and can appreciate the other types, the Stormys - remain my favourite pickups.

Welcome to the club ( and how I envy your 335 ownership ! ).

Great post!

The SM's are so articulate and sweet. Glad that you like them, they'll make you smile everytime you pick that 335 up!!

This set up is, in many ways, my dream set up. I have always wanted a semi and I jut know that when I do get one, SM's will be on the shopping list shortly after. Great post.

Thanks for the positive replies everybody, may I wish you all well for your future gear desires.  May Santa bless you.

Fourth Feline - we have some kind of reverse but similar path going on as I now want another Les Paul to try some Mules in, but don't have any cash left!  How good are the Mules?  Let me be more specific - they're bound to be good....what do they sound like in your view?

As for my 335, I'm deeply in love - modified with pearl block inlays and SM's - couldn't be better.  The original purchase of the 335 was made very affordable by a 2-year loan with a ridiculously low interest rate from - guess where? - Northern Rock!   I did blush a bit when they made the news...!

What you need is to use sub-prime compression. It appears to have the same quality as the original file but in actual fact the quality is much less than it appears. The only trouble is their tendency to imbalance your webspace if you use too many at once and the quality drops significantly over a short period of time.
I too use chicken as a measurement.

Hiya Fbloke ,

I always thinkof them as the next best thing in sensitivity to picking dynamics and 'openess' - but with a tasteful mid range 'hump' that just says "Les Paul".

When I pick up or listen to a Les Paul, I like to hear that 'thickness' and density in the mid range - that seems so characteristic of that size and weight of guitar. An intimate sound for an intimate shape of instrument. The nice thing about it still being a BKP and an Alinico IV - is that I hear in them the best of both worlds, i.e. the 'revelation' of dynamics you discovered with the S.Ms , but with a bit of creamy thickness that is so nice when you play quieter and / or further up the neck.

I must declare however, that I am more of a quiet player - heros including  Peter Green, B.B. King and larry Carlton.  There is however a more aggresive quality ( than the S.Ms ) if the Mules are  picked harder, Mules do indeed 'kick' out the notes more from under the pick when hit harder.

I can imagine that an out and out 'Rocker' could get some great Paul Kossof / Gary Moore sounds with ease from the Mules in an L.P. It's well worth putting a Push/pull switch in one on the tone controls too, for an option of putting the pickups out of phase with each other in the middle toggle position.  This I feel gives me the choice of either the 'nasal' Peter Green sound or a standard  in between sound .  I know that BKP do the very desirable P.G. pickup set, but  2x AIV Mules + switch = total flexibility.

The Mules still sound very open and spacious though, an Ideal next step from the S.Ms tonally. The other option I like the sound clips of are the 'Emeralds' for that more saturated mid push sound.

However, I feel that If like me you have fallen in love with the openess, sweetness and dynamic soundstaging of the  Stormy Monday's - Mules are the next best source of contrast -as opposed to outright change.

It would be interesting to hear from other members that push their pickups harder and louder than me though.   :)
