Meshuggah - Obzen
« on: May 01, 2008, 12:14:47 AM »
Which pickup would be the best for Meshuggah's Obzen tone? I'm thinking either the Miracle Man or Warping. The MM might not have enough gain (Obzen has the most ferocious tone ever) but the Warpig might not be tight enough at those low tunings. Perhaps someone with more experience with BKP's and 8 Strings can figure this out.

It's going to be very hard for most of us to give recommendations as the 8 string pickups are very new, and I don't think there has been much feedback at all on them yet.

That said, I'd say possibly a Painkiller would do the job well - extremely tight, stupidly clear, plenty of mids, and quite bright-voiced.

Tim (Mills - the guy behind Bareknuckles) really is the person to ask though, he knows his pickups like noone else, and always gives great advice and recommendations.

From memory, Mesh uses the Lundgren M8, which is an extremely bright pickup. I don't think BKP even makes a pickup this bright, but as for tightness you could get there with a Painkiller, MM, or C-Pig.

seriously... buy a POD if you really want that sound
that tone is weird and artificial
nothing compared to the old albuns recorded with real amps
the album None had a great tone
i can almost feel the guitar punching my face hearing Destroy Erase Improve
the last albums are all about matching the drums with the riffage, but no real meat from the guitar

the miracle man has enough "gain" for anything, but i'd recommend the painkiller
the miracle man is already dark as hell in mahogany in slightly low tunings (D or C# standard)
ps: the ceramic pig will be tight enough
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Painkiller definately. I got the C-Pig and while it has plenty of tightness, the painkiller has a notch more and you're going to need all you can get for the obZen tone.

iv tried playing Obzen style riffs in my mahog body with miracle mans, and i tune down to drop B. it still sounds nothing like meshuggah! i run through a POD as well.
i find it quite hard tone to undetrstand, not sure if its actually that distorted or whether its the fact its an 8 string guitar ripping your face off.
bloody good album tho iv been amzed with it for weeks.

Lundgren M8 into Vetta.

The M7 and M8 are the 'Meshuggah' pickup, not BKPs...
A-Pig 7s, Miracle Man & Mule, Cold Sweats... Expensive kit and no talent posse.

I imagine it has more to do with being an 8-string and so at least a full fourth below B (low F#) with the added scale length and string gauge required it would be nigh on impossible to get that sound on a 6-string unless its a baritone.

Yeah, low F# and 30 inch scale. You get a completely different set of harmonics going on that you'd be hard pushed to get any other way...

Meshuggah don't use alot of gain on Obzen either. you want a more cleaner tone to get that percussive kind of tone they have.

Tim has posted an 8-string Warpig/Cold Sweat clip in the players section if you are interested.

It is a great metal tone but to my ears this is synced with the bass.

It's even low F and E mostly. For that kind of tone you must remember their bass player play in the same octave with a very distorted tone. Basically they set their guitar tone with a mid/high focus and the bass is set to occupy the rest of the spectrum.
If you're not doing that (ie have your bass player play clean) I'd suggest something more organic, I'd try a C-Pig myself.
