They've just changed the rules.  All sellers must offer PayPal as an option to sell anything on eBay!

The money grabbing personal information hoarding cretins

That's my selling days on eBay over with then

hmm seriously, why?
I was about to have a clearout, and I don't really want to have another 5% hacked off (or whatever it is).
And I guess as soon as you put Paypal accepted, it puts:

Paypal (Preferred)
Personal cheque
other
etc

Just irritating

That is rather sneaky. But fits in with the whole recent increase in ebay fees too.
  rather depressing to be honest.

I expect ebay, as a company, will now slowly squeeze as much as it can get away with. And after a while, some other company's website will come along, capturing people's imagination and offering a much better deal. Then everyone will start selling through this new website. After a while the new website will start squeezing the punters for what it can get. etc, etc.

It's the nature of capitalism and greed. And I'm afraid by just accepting to live in our culture, we are all forced to try and work alongside these companies, whether we agree with their policies or not.  :(

I've seen people offer Paypal but say the buyer has to add 5% to the cost if they use it. I guess that will become more prolific.

I like paypal as a buyer and I've never sold on eBay so this doesn't effect me really. However, I'm really not keen on the fact that they have enforced paypal, it should be a choice, and most people offer it anyway.

It seems eBay to drifting away from a 'free market', don't know if it was one in the first place.

Never was... and never will... it's a way to own money as much as our jobs... they are well known and you can sell easy there, they ask for 5% comission to you use his site ang get a bigger number of people looking at what you want to sell...

It's unfair not to offer a choice, but I prefer to be paid by PayPal even though I end up with less money in my pocket.  I'd rather have the money straight away than wait for a cheque to clear.

This is all part of eBay's policy of favouring buyers over sellers - of course it costs the buyer nothing to use PayPal, the seller suffers all the charges.  And they're also apparently getting rid of sellers' right to leave feedback for buyers - so even if you deal with some tosser who takes weeks to pay or doesn't pay at all, you can't respond or "warn" other sellers.

I thought eBay was supposed to be an even-handed marketplace for matching buyers and sellers, but it seems to be moving further away from that concept...

Fernando,

It's just the fact that PayPal is owned by eBay, thus they hammer you twice for fees when you sell anything    Everyone needs to make a living, but that really stings.

Here's the eBay announcement:

IMPORTANT: Upcoming eBay Payment Requirements

Starting in late April, eBay will require all sellers to offer PayPal on all their listings. This will ensure that buyers are generally offered an increased level of protection on goods listed on eBay. Sellers who list in the Vehicles and Residential Property categories will be exempt from this policy.

Plus there's more trouble here:

We'd like to let you know about some new steps we're taking to help prevent fraudulent unauthorised activity on eBay accounts.

From today, we'll start noting the computers you regularly use when buying and selling on eBay. We'll use a combination of cookies and Flash objects to link your user ID with the computer you're using. This data is encrypted and can only be read by eBay. It doesn't include any contact information or details of eBay transactions.

Later this year, we'll begin checking the computer you use to list an item to see whether it's one of the computers you regularly use. To confirm that it's really you when you list an item using a different computer (e.g. at a friend's house, in a hotel, at the library), we'll lead you through a simple automated process where we call a phone number on your account. We might also prompt you to verify your identity in other ways.

I'm a long time ebay buyer/seller but this just sucks - big time.

I will certainly not be listing anything more on ebay, unless it's an emergency. I'll continue to buy from ebay (for now) but I can see their business going down the tubes, unless they give themselves a good kick up the arse.

Surely the time is right for a major company like Google to step in and do their own auction site? Mind you it may go the same way as the greedy bar-stewards from ebay have.

Actually I'm not bothered about this, yes I know they are going to use that information for marketing if they possibly can, but frankly it will help to prevent fraud, and eBay must be rife with it, I'm not going to be too harsh on them trying to prevent it. Plus they have actually told us, it's their site, they could implement that without saying a word.

I'm with Ailean on this one. I feel there are more positives to negatives about checking which computer we are logging in from. There are a surprising number of "parasitic" auctions where some a$$hole hacks someone elses account and uses it for fraudulent activity. This will be almost totally stopped by what ebay are planning to do.
