First BKP Install: Mules!

:D   WOW!!!   :D

Just had my first set of BKPs (Mules) installed in my Les Paul Classic Antique.  They completely blew away my expectations... even after reading the same types of comments from you all and listening to hours of clips.

I had a gig last night and my first listen was plugging in at the gig.  I had picked up the guitar on my way to the gig after having a setup and the Mules installed.  The guitar tech came out to see me and said, "Man, those are some great sounding pickups!"  And he never says a peep.  Normally, he holes up in his workshop and never comes out.  So, I was excited at that point.  Then, after plugging in.  Whoa, Nelly!

I was leery about getting the Mules because I really didn't want the Warren Haynes sound in the neck position (thick mids, not very open).  Totally opposite.  They're open and dynamic.  What a sound palette!

Tim,  don't ever stop doing what you're doing.  You're a master.

Now... what kind of BKPs to put in my SG?   :twisted:

Hello and welcome to the forum Matlock !

Nice to hear you are as delighted as the rest of us with your purchase.

For the S.G. ? As LULUSG quite rightly said, you decide - from blues/jazz  to crushing Metal ...

The only exclusions are  ( according to our Guru Tim ) -  that you will either need lower gain pickups :

 ( Stormy Mondays = sweet )

 ( Riff Raffs = a bit More biting )

To work with all that Mahogany, or higher gain :

Miracle Man

Warpig e.t.c

To cut through it.

The medium gain pickups are said to mud out a little in a slab of mahogany.

I went the low gain route, and found ( as you did ) that you could really  "hear the wood".


The main thing, is that like so many other people - you have discovered that BKP praise is not 'hype' - it is justifiable worship !  8)

It's nice to hear others have that 'WOW' experience when they first play a new set of BKP's. And your reaction seems familier... what set do I get next?

You started with the best BKP imo - the Mule pretty much does it all for me.

After the Mule, my fave BKP to date is the Crawler then the Warpig.

Thanks for the great input.  It took me so long to decide on the Mules for my LP.  I'm thinking either Stormy Mondays or Stormy/Riff Raff.  I don't get too much into the harder stuff.  Crawlers?  Interesting.  :D

Crawlers are great, but I wouldn't put them in an SG.  They're quite dark and grindy (at least in my Edwards LP copy), I think they'd be mushy in all-mahogany.

I think Stormy/Riff Raff is a great combo unless you want to heavy it up.

Welcome!  Glad to hear your digging the Mules!  For your Sg I would consider a set of Stormy Mondays or Rebel Yells.

From what I've heard of these pickups ' In the flesh' - I would also vote for the Riff Raff bridge / Stormy Monday neck. The best of both worlds.

Personally, I prefer Stormy Mondays all round, but please bear in mind that I do like mellow ...  :)

Sushi,  I play all styles of rock.  Don't venture much into metal.  As far as gear: Fender Super Reverb w/ the Fulltone OCD being the main source of overdriven tone.   If I were to keep one pedal, that would be it.

Next to buy: Bogner Shiva.  Oh... and some BKPs for my SG.  :mrgreen:

Of course, OCD is a great overdrive and must be good with the super reverb !! I have one and a fulldrive2 Mosfet too. Magnifique !!
