Maxon OD808 vs Ibanez TS9 vs Bloody Murder
« on: May 17, 2008, 08:02:40 PM »
Hi,

Im trying to decide which pedal to get to help me tighten up (and add a bit more gain to) my amp's distortion channel.

I will be getting the pedals from Bodenhamer Electronics - and will add be modded (OD808 and TS9 will have the Chaos Mod)

I play a Gibson Les Paul with MMs (do high output 'buckers go well with tube screamers? I heard they tend not to go well together ie. buckers over about 12k) and into a Mesa Boogie F-50.

I will be using it to try and get Melodeth type sounds...

Can you guys please advise me?

PS: I e-mailed Mr Bodenhamer and he told me that although the Maxon OD808 is his favourite out-of-the-box pedal, it sounds the darkest - will this be a problem for fast, downtuned, palm-muted stuff? Also, he is not able to add a true-bypass for the OD808 - would that bne a significant hindrance?

Thanks

Personally, i'd be a bit weary of buying anything not true bypass, especially considering there are others out there that do offer that option...

I'd get the bloody murder, for a number of reasons.

1. It's modded by him to be the best tube screamer he's heard.
2. It's true bypass
3. It's got the best quality components in it. He says himself:

it just plain sounds better because it's built from the ground up with the best, lowest tolerence parts available

4. The tone knob sounds awesome.
5. It's looks cool and it's custom so you can have that "i'm better than everyone else" feeling.
6. It's at least 50$ (25quid) cheaper than the other pedals modded.

:)

You know it makes sense. Can't wait to get my mine, as soon as my dad sorts it out (he's buying me it as a treat for no C's at GCSE (my history mark went up) and because i got distinction at grade 8 orchestral percussion =D)

The OD 808 is a brilliant pedal, but wouldn't do what you want HH, if you want a thin lizzy type sound then the 808 is the one for you, otherwise go for the bloody murder more out & out mayhem available

Hmm, what if i took out the bloody murder - Maxon OD808 vs TS9 because time is not on my side; how would these pedals compare for the job?

PS: Horsehead i asked Bodenhamer what pedals he recommended for the job that i specified and he gave me that list

Wow it's cool to see people know about the Bodenhamer stuff here, I didn't realize the word has spread so far so fast!

I personally love my chaos modded TS808, but really anything he does will sound great.

don't be too turned off by the buffer in the OD808; stay wary that a true-bypass pedal just acts like you've added an extra length of cable when its off.

I run through 30' of cables. a 20 footer from guitar to pedals, and 10 feet from pedals to amp. I find my rig sounds better with the OD in the chain because the buffer helps reduce the treble roll off you find in long cables.

Also, its really transparent, i cant hear a difference in tone, it just sounds like i have shorter cables.
my maxon OD 808 really DOES make poop sound good

from what I heard when i a/b the 808 and 9 was the 808 was warmer and the 9 was brighter and had more gain i geuss, but if ur using this on the distortion for a boost u should put the gain on 0 (not .5, 0) and the output on 10, and the tone on w.e so the gain dosent matter, just the tone, so id deffinatley go od 808
