Buying a new cab but a bit confused....
« on: May 17, 2008, 10:13:55 PM »
Hey guys, I'm looking to get a cab for my Laney VC30 1x12 to fill out the sound and generally make it as nice sounding as I can.

I would love to get the Orange PPC 2x12 as I've heard great things about it (and Orange is a little lust bunny of mine).

My questions are the following (sorry, there are a few):

The Laney VC30 is an 8ohm amp, with a switch for 4ohm (i'm guessing when an extension cabinet is used?).  The internal speaker is NOT disconnected when an extension cab is used, it is used along with it.
So, which/what PPC 2x12 do I get? what ohmage and all that?

Also, the max wattage of the cab is 130W or thereabouts.  The wattage of the amp is 30W.  Should I be matching the wattages or not?  I'm assuming not but I don't really have much idea.

Thanks to anyone that can help me out as I'm all out to sea on this.

If the current speaker is 8 Ohm, get an 8 Ohm cab and switch the amp to 4 Ohm.

Thanks for that Hunter, much appreciated.
Seems that I can't get the Orange PPC 2x12 then as they all appear to be 16ohm cabs.  Ah well, I'll continue hunting.

Laney do extension cabs. I have no idea of what they are like but the  Jensen speakers in my VC30 ( 2 x 10s)are pretty good and I was, at one point, considering getting a 2  x 10 cab but haven't as yet.I was thinking of sticking one of the other side of the stage as the guys were saying that they couldn't always hear me( the amp is very directional) although now I sometimes stick a mic in front of it and run it through the stage monitors. As Hunter said, you need to get an 8 ohm cab.As for power handling, the only thing to do is to get a cab capable of exceeding the output of the amp.

Hey thanks for doing that hunter, and thanks for all the advice everyone.
I was looking at the Marshall 1936 or the 1936v.
The Vox 2x12 also appealed, mostly due to the styling admittedly.
On another note, the money that was going to go towards a cab has now been put towards a recording solution of some sort, probably the Boss BR-900.
A new cab isn't too far off though....

Just discovered these, they look SWEET and seem very well put together plus you have free choice as to which speaker combination you're after.

Lol.  Woogie, I'll go ahead and say that you're always going to have that Laney.
