Orange Amps? what are they like
« on: May 19, 2008, 08:52:19 PM »
Hi everyone on these forums.
Having spent the last 3 years being driven by a quite frankly atrocious vox valvetronix amp, i decided to start saving for a new one
After much browsing and playing in my local music shop, the Orange Tiny Terror through a PPC1x12 cab in particular stuck in my memory.
Has anyone had any positive/negative experiences with Orange, in particular the Tiny Terror?
many thanks for the help.

The wrath of Rob Chappers is enough to make me consider getting an Orange amp

Have a quick search for Tiny Terror on these forums:

you get 124 threads as matches (including this thread). I think that speaks for itself! There's a lot of love for that amp here (and a little bit of indifference, but not the majority for sure).

There are a lot of videos of Rob comparing a few of them I believe too, good demo's. Also the Vol comparison is well worth a watch

I have a Tiny Terror and I'd like to just give you some pointers on the amp.

1 Replace the stock valves as the chinese ones in there are unreliable and mine blew very quickly.

2 Make sure you get the right purchase on the screws when taking off or replacing the cover as they can strip and mean that you have to prise the screw out before you can take off the cover (happened to me when I upgraded to torx head screws.).

3 It is a very gainy amp but not very compressed in its dynamics. If you want a modern metal or a good lead sound I'd recommend getting an overdrive or a distortion pedal as a boost.

Apart from these 3 points it's a fantastic amp and you'd be hard pressed to find anything that quite had the same feel without going to really high amounts of money (even if it is just a modded AC-15 clone at heart.).
I too use chicken as a measurement.

I have one, orange 1x12 cab too. I love it!

Unusually I love the clean tone- I even use it clean live with my band, great! The gain is amazing too, i use pedals for distortion but when recording i plan to just crank the amp.

I used to own one and they're great amps for the money.  Buy one and enjoy it  :)

Edit:  Oh yeah, and +1 on Rob Chappers the legend.  The guy is awesome!

they are going to release a Tiny Terror combo btw! and in a word 'amazing' is the answer to the question. I would get the Rockerverb 30 amp though if I were you as it has much more ooomph, personally I found the Orange Tiny Terror too quiet for my liking, and found it wasn't good enough as an all rounder, ie for gigs and for recording, I do on the other hand think the Mesa Boogie Lonestar combo is much much better and also the Vox Heritige AC15, but both are much more expensive, and I can't afford any of them lol

No need for biasing at all.
I just put bog standard JJ Electronic ECC83Ss and EL84s into it (which were what the originals came with stock but the new ones run with cheapo valves which could possibly be re-branded Shuguangs. This is perfectly good for display purposes but if you want to love the sound every time you play you will have to re-valve it and it will just keep getting better as the valves cook in.).

I have a Rockerverb 50 Combo.

I absolutely love it. Great cleans and the sustain on the gain is to die for! It has valve protection too - if a pair goes down then it will run at half volume to get you through a gig.

I HATE the colour though! LOL!

I actually fancy going to just a single channel amp (AC30 or 1962) so may sell mine yet! I know I will regret it though!

I have an Orange TT + 1x12 and a RockerVerb 50 + 4x12. Love them both.

The TT offers a really crunchy sound at room levels, ideal for home use. Too low powered for a gig but I assume you knew that. It was my love of the TT that made me look at the RV50 (which is a seriously lovely amp).

Not everyone likes them so try a few, but it's a great amp if you like it's sound. (or sell some reletives and buy a RockerVerb :) )

I played the Rocker 30 combo recently and I loved it. I was going to get one but I was lucky enough to do a straight trade for something I was looking out for so I had to pass.

I also have a TT and the PPC 112 cab.

It's the only amp I've ever owned which makes me sound... not shitee.  And it's so simple, you can't really feck up the sound no matter how incompetent you are.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM
