Fender mustang question- possible?
« on: May 22, 2008, 07:30:26 PM »
I love the shape of Mustangs, but the short scale neck is a massive turn off- i find most 24.75" necks too small, so the 24" is a pain. So my question is- would it be possible to whack a strat neck onto a mustang body? Or would it be totally useless and not work?

i should point out why i suggest making a new body rather than modding the old one

to mod the old body you have two options

1.  move the position of the neck.  the best way to do this is to fill the old neck pocket and reroute a new one but you still might not have enough heel  for a good strong join

2.  Move the position of the bridge, again it means a large patch and the scratchplate will no longer fit

Both represent quite a few compromises

wheras a new custom body  can be tweaked to incorporate a little of both of those and maybe even a slight enlargement of the body to suit

I made a guitar using an old Fender Bronco body, which is very similar to the Mustang, but I ended up relocating both the bridge and neck pocket, so that's not very relevant.

A Musicmaster or Duo-Sonic body would be easier to use, as there's no trem cavity to contend with so moving the bridge is easy.  You'd need a new scratchplate though.
