Would you choose this over Guitar stuff?
« on: May 25, 2008, 06:34:30 PM »
I teach guitar along side my 9-5 and it is quite lucrative. My wife thinks that now we can have great holidays and stuff but all I want to do is spend it on guitars and I struggle to think of something I would rather spend it on. I sorted out a new T.V and a decent Hi-Fi but that wasn't just guitar lesson money and now that they are taken care of I have a endless list of guitar related gear I need!   and everything else just feels like a waste of money. Is this the burden of being a guitarist or am I alone in my gread.

Not at all mate, I have a list as long as my arm of Guitar stuff I want to buy. I drive a fairly old N-reg 1 litre Suzuki Swift, and if I had £10,000 to blow on whatever I wanted I'd still spend it all on Axe gear.

I think the answer is possibly to have really good quality stuff - no compromises so that what you buy satisfies so well that you don't always need more.

Many of the guys I make guitars for are maybe tired of the endless quest - trading this guitar to buy that etc. SO they have a made to measure  guitar that covers a lot of what they would want in a guitar.

Sure they still also have a strat and a tele and whatever to fill in the gaps but they chose to have stuff that hits the mark.

Some amps are great for this like the Egnater Mod 50 as it can be reconfigured to do whatever by changing modules - like on the Randall MTS series.

I enjoy having rack gear that covers many of my musical bases: ADA. Soldano, Rocktron and Engl

I guess what I am saying is sometimes that spending more on less items can sometimes works better  than an endless spend on budget to mid price stuff.

You mentioned you wife wants to go on great holidays - I'm not trying to be controversial, but she deserves a bit of consideration, surely?

Good answer Jonathan but wrong . My list grows daily, almost like a hunter looking for trophy kills, I really want a couple of customs from you, a couple from WezV, a Phil Collen Jackson and so on, the list is endless and my greed seems insatiable.

Philly Q, do not fear, she is getting a holiday, we are off to the states in October, my point being is that I could quite happily never go on holiday again if it meant more guitar gear.
Obviously I would like to maintain that this is a fairly light hearted look at G.A.S and it's grasp on myself and others.

Well, you may as well tell us all what you are wanting :P Then explain it to your Mrs and how much it means to you :D

I agree, I could quite happily never go on holiday and spend the money on guitars, DVDs, CDs etc.  And indeed, that's exactly what I do.

But I'm not married (or similar).... and if I was I'm pretty confident I'd never be "allowed" to buy another guitar again!

I can relate to that feeling, at the moment.  I've bought and sold a lot of guitars in the last few years and my GAS has sort of (temporarily?) burned out.  I think I've started to "zero in" on what I really like, or don't like, in a guitar.  I'd like to have a clearout - if I can bring myself to do it - and get one or two really nice "keepers".

The only problems with that are:
1. The lingering fear that that "dream guitar" might not turn out to be everything I'd hoped (unless it also came with a set of dream fingers...)
2. The feeling that a couple of grand is an awful lot to spend on a guitar for someone who basically can't play for toffee (although in fact it's no worse than spending the same money on 3 or 4 guitars.  And waiting for it to be built might be a useful exercise in being patient and non-impulsive).

Ah, we've all been there.  Before you know it you'll be 44 and wishing you were 14 again.  Well, maybe not 14, but 20-something anyway.

My guitar related earnings go into the general housekeeping pot -much to my irritation. I used to use it to buy my little luxuries but like many others right now I am feeling the pinch and any gear is a luxury item unless it is to enable me to continue playing.

Totally agree with Johnathan on this. I've had a big collection of guitars in the past. The probs with this were 1) I had too many to play 2) They were all mid-low price range. I now have 2 quality Fenders and don't plan on ever selling them. All I need now is either a PRS (Custom 24 or SC245) or a custom build from somewhere.

I honestly believe I will be happy when I have the final piece in my jigsaw. At least that's what I am trying to convince my self anyway!
I think I hate being indecisive.

if it was me I'd take the money and stick it in the bank, but then I budget everything and never impulse buy

I never went on holiday as a kid so I don't see the point of it, a holiday to me is going to a festival

I think myself and Sue are well known for spending too much on gear, and frankly if I got a load of money then at least a good portion of it would go in more gear. Generally I agree with you donovanx, there isn't anything I'd rather spend the money on.

I only partially agree with Johnathan, I've never been one for trading stuff, if I buy it I intend to keep it generally, that's not true of some of the cheaper gear I've bought, but I think all of the guitars we have now, and certainly the main amp are keepers. However this in no way means that I wouldn't buy more gear. If I could afford it I'd have a load of amps / cabs and guitars (or a start I'd have every set of BK's and a guitar to put them in).

I guess there would come a point where I had gear that just never got used, then I might start selling stuff, to make room for the new gear, but I'd rather keep collecting it

my girlfriend  (actually, i may have to start saying fiancee) fully understands that any guitar related earnings  (seperate to my full time job) are mine to spend on tools, piles of wood, pickups and hardware and the occasional tattoo

although that didnt stop me saving up all my repair monies this year to get an engagement ring  - possibly my biggest non-guitar related purchase.
