Ceramic magnets are usually black whilst alnico ones are steel coloured if polished - not sure about unpolished though

you can test with a multimeter - alnico is conductive wheras ceramic isnt

definately alnico, unless what i think is the magnet is actually some sort of metal spacer. nice tip with the multimeter wez!! :)

thanks to some trading with ToneMonkey i happened to be reading through a copy of Jason Lollars pickup winding book yesterday

it has some handy hints on identifying magnets

well, its not the strongest magent thats for sure... however it is the thing lablelled "alnico V magnet" in this diagram... so i'm sure its the magnet... and i'm sure (now) its some sort of alnico. i don't know what strength.

the winding is 14k-ish - symmetric - its probably AV then.
