guitar maintenance
« on: May 30, 2008, 09:29:16 PM »
I've had my guitar for 2 and a half years now, and I need to get some new string so I thought, what better time to find out what else I should get, I don't look after it as well as I used to and it needs a good sorting out

the main concerns are:

does the neck look dry, aka does it need that "lemon oil" stuff or is it just dirt?

and what's the best way to get rid of the dirt

should I do anything about the back of the neck or leave it?

any other recommendations?

been busy and not got round to it, I mean to change them every 2 months

they are 3, maybe 4 months old, hardly had chance to play on them when they were new :(

lemon oil isnt needed yet, under the grime teh board looks to be well hydrated - thats just grime and needs removing 0000 liberon wire wool from axminster will do the trick... might even break out the trimmed down toothbush for this.... naptha (lighter fluid (note the word fluid.... fluid =liquid... not aerosol gas) will help with cleaning tough grime)

you should definately consider a fret dress as well as changing your strings more often!!!

anyway, wire wool

that wire wool is good for slightly taking the gloss off the finish

i should give the usual warning about masking off pickups before using the wrie wool... just as a precaution

well definately giveit a rub done with the wire wool first to clean it up

then might be worth giving it a few coats of tru- oil followed by anothe rub down a few days later.

thats how jonathan does his oiled neck and its working well for me since i finally got around to buying some tru-oil - so we can thank jonathan for that one

the tru-oil is just quicker and esier than the oils i was using before but the results are similar
