Hesitation : Warpig Set or Rio grande Set?
« on: June 02, 2008, 02:49:27 AM »
Hi there

I'm thinking about giving one of my guitars a good upgrade.
Body : alder
pickups : 2 humbuckers

I can get for a good price 2 sets : a Warpig alnico set or a Rio grande Punchbox/Crunchbox set.

I mainly use distortion for my playing but i also need from time to time in a song, warm and fat clean sounds.
I play all kinds of rock and metal (except  death metal).

Which one will fit my style?

thks

No offence, but no-one on here is going to recommend the Rio Grandes to you.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Get Rio Grandes, they rock! :D

*cough*

Eh... sorry about that.

There are other BKPs than the Pigs that sound warm and fat and works well for rock and metal. Could you be more specific? Maybe some examples of tones you're going for?

for an all round pickup that will do anything, I think the Crawler is hard to beat.

Yep. Very, very hard to beat. Can do everything from free to slayer.

I personally reckon both would fit the bill fairly well for what you're after.  'pigs are higher output I think; a closer bkp equivalent to the crunch/punchbox would probably be the holydiver.  never personally heard the rio grandes (closest I've got was when matt bellamy used them) but to be honest I'd expect the bkps to produce slightly better cleans

thanks,mates!

I play stuff like RATM,Children of Bodom,Air,...i'm really diverse.
But the main point is that i want a raw, powerful sound with big bottoms for distortion and fat, warm tones for cleans.
I don't need thin sounds like a strat can produce,i like the thickness of an humbucker.

maybe both sets will do but unfortunately i've never tried anyone of those,so any advice will be great
 :D

I think you'd be best suited with Holy Divers or Crawlers. Lots of fat bottom end, great cleans and versatility.

And what about a couple of EMG?
(cheap and easy to find)

With respect to the forum, I don't think EMG's or Rio Grande's would be appropriate, nor do I think that anyone here would recommend either of those sets.
But, if you are looking for a BKP set, than I am sure there will be plenty of people here willing to help. As far as price, check out ebay for used BKP sets. I have seen quite a few floating around there.

why not?  I know it's the bkp forum and obviously users will show a preference to their products, but I've seen recommendations for seymour duncan pickups on here in the past, so I don't see why emg or rio grande should be any different.  if you like the sound of them, then does it really matter who made them?

We constantly use other manudacturers' pickups as reference points, but I don't think anyone should be using Tim's webspace to say "don't buy BKP, buy Duncan or EMG".  Apart from anything else, it's bad manners.

The only times I can recall other brands being recommended is for pickups not covered by the BKP range - Gretsch replacements, for example.

I don't think anyone's saying "don't buy bkp" - certainly not me in any case, I can't recommend them enough - they're just discussing options.  I'm sure zinguera will make his own decision, and the fact that he's asking on here suggests to me that a bkp set is at the front of his mind already

don't fight,pals

yeah, obviously i've considered bkp in the first place coz' i already got some in one of my guitars.
They're beyond words.

But...actually like i said in the first post,i'm wondering if warpigs would be a good choice instead of RG's or even,EMG's.
I can't try 'em all before the purchase so,maybe someone with more experience with other brands like RG's or EMG's can help me out here.

I don't expect someone to bad-mouthing on BKP.
I'm just trying to get some help to fit my expectations in terms of sound.
We're in the pickups section,right? :P

Thanks for helping me,guys!

noooooooooooooooooooooooooo
EMG's are the totally opposite way to the BKP heaven

buy only one BKP
then you buy another one when you have the money
(that's what i'll have to do for my next guitar)
