Your first hint: when recording heavy guitars with a modeller, layer a lot of lower gain sounds. At least 4.

Yeah, someone mentioned about this briefly, so should I double up everything? Or just do a few layers of the backing, so maybe the chords or whatever...

For straight up metal rhythm its pretty common to have 2 tracks left, 2 right, panned -100% -80% : 80% 100%

That gets results, using the right settings (when I say lower gain I mean LOWER gain, like 1/3 of what you normally play with, or note definition goes out the window),

But thats by no means the only thing to do! As Kev rightly says: experiment!!!

Yeah! :) i'm looking forward to it, i'l have a whole summer of recording, so should be great! :)

Also, if I get some decent monitors, do i still need to get some decent headphones? I don't really mind if I need to, just curious.

Well, if you were recording through an amp, I'd say some HD25-1s or similar were pretty much essential.

But, since you arent, no you dont need them.

Some would be handy to have around for, if nothing else, reference.

But thats a slippery, slippery slope my friend.

So, for the recording specifically: handy but not vital.

In general though, everyone should have at least one good set of headphones.

You can use them for mixing, but their biggest use is in tacking in noisy environments (like next to an amp). If youre in the same room as the amp you want headphones that both give you very good, clear and uncoloured sound and block external noise. About the best around (that I know about anyway) at that are Senn HD25-1s.

Its to have an amp in the background and still hear your click, previously recorded tracks and what have you, and be able to play and record and monitor your tracking real time without having speakers on, and the mic picking up the sound from them too.

But DI-ing, no mics involved, no amps involved, you dont need it: you just do it all through the monitors.

You can still use it if thats what you prefer, though.

It may be worth trying to see how youre most comfortable working: some folks like the headphones all the time, no matter what. If thats the case, get something cheap and cheerfull, but with high bang-for-buck factor, like Senn HD202s, and see what you think. If you like tracking with headphones, get some good ones. Try to make sure they're isoloating so that if you come round to recording with amps/mics you can still use them.

P.S. Its no trouble, happy to help.

If your going down the DI route have a look at SansAmp's new range of analogue pedals simulating Mashalls, Fenders, Mesa Boogie and vox. 150 each. Guitarist gave them 5 stars for everything.
