HELP!! Midi keyboard setup with cubase
« on: June 07, 2008, 03:00:22 PM »
If you know how to do this, pleaaaaaase give me a hand, it's really starting to piss me off.

I bought a midi to USB adaptor and thought I'd plug my casio ct-640 into my computer and use it as a midi controller, but I was wroooooooooooooong.

Cubase refuses to let me set the keyboard as midi input, it only lets me set it as an OUTPUT source @_@

here's what I did:
plug IN cable to OUT port on keyboard
plug OUT cable to IN port on keyboard

plug USB end of cable into computer

windows recognizes this as "USB AUDIO DEVICE (2)"

but it doesn't show up under the midi input device list in cubase

it's a casio ct-640 synthesizer,
if you mean my audio interface, I don't have one, just an onboard soundcard.

it's just a generic noname midi to usb adapter,
it's got 2 cables that are midi in and out, leading to a box with 3 leds on it, and that goes to a USB connector.

no prob,
I checked all over the drivers section for the usb audio device(in the control panel > device manager), couldn't find anything that resembles "full duplex" or "two way communication".
Where should I be looking?

but I do know that I'm using the ASIO4ALL driver for my asio.
Does that help?

in drivers under sound, video drivers should be the midi driver.

If that doesn't work try http://www.borg.com/~jglatt/progs/software.htm

first download and run genmidi.dll and midifile.dll..then midiinputviewer
open the midi input viewer(with keyboard on and connected midi) select under input your midi source and same with output then press any key on keyboard and see if a load of numbers come up to tell you you have communication.

Also on there is a prog called midi info, which tells you what channels etc and what equipment you have connected

Checking these things will tell if its keyboard or cubase

ok I tried MIDI input viewer, the "USB audio device" shows up under both input and output of the program, but I tried playing a bunch of notes, putting the keyboard in all different kinds of modes, switching the cables around, etc etc, and nothing shows up in the MIDI viewer window whatsoever,
so I assume either the interface or the keyboard is at fault?

Would seem that way, was why asked to do that test..was to take cubase..which can have it's own problems out of the equation.

Is there any keyboard shops near you? or a friend who has a comp with midi that you know works
