LP pickup choice, picking one of three
« on: June 08, 2008, 01:14:22 AM »
Ive got an Epi LP custom, and its got alnico 2 mondays in it. I want to put something a good bit more aggressive in there though.

Im torn between 3 pickups
The Cold Sweat
The Painkiller
The Ceramic Warpig

I like a nice midrange, so im a bit wary of The Cold Sweat, but ive heard them and it did sound darn nice.

My music is modern hardrock. think audiovent if youve ever heard them, but a bit more heavy and not quite as poppy tonally. Pretty much in that vein of playing though, beat and riffwise (albeit downtuned a bit as well).

So, anybody here have anything to say before i pick one and run with it?

CS neck and WP bridgel seems to be a popular choice around these parts.

Warpig is overkill in a les paul, unless all you wanna do is shake the floor and blow the roof off.

Have you considered Crawlers or Holy Divers? Both have very strong midrange and are very versatile sets. If you're set on a ceramic pickup though, I'd take the Cold Sweat. It has less mids than the Painkiller, but from all the clips I've heard the CS does not sound scooped at all, just more balanced sounding and less pronounced, but still tight and aggressive. If I were you I'd get a CS bridge and AIV Mule neck, so you can still have the sweet vintageness of the Stormy Monday set but like you said, more aggresive. The Mule will do high-gain but you're probably gonna need a TS-style boost for it. It will also be a good compliment to your Nailbomb/Crawler equipped guitar.
