Am I mad, deaf or something else ?
« on: June 08, 2008, 09:58:24 PM »
Had a great gig with my new Rockerverb 50 today.

Had gain and the MV both at about noon (no attenuation) - through my 4x12. Remember this is a 50W tube amp. I was standing 6 feet in front of the cab.

I'll be honest, I didn't think it was that loud.

What's wrong with me ?

thats good - you must have had a very clear sound. it messed up/nastily distorted sound that appears to be loud and causes tinitus etc.

i agree that 50w of quality valve power might not seem that loud in a club situation too, after all the space is a bit bigger than at home

I think the key here may be the fact that you were 6 feet away from the amp.

If you had asked someone standing about 20-30 feet from the amp if it was quiet, I think you may have found that it wasn't.

Amps are built to project sound. I find that my Marshall TSL601 sounds so much .. bigger when I'm further away from it. I find this is the same whith the PA speakers we use, which are old Peavey Hisis ones.

Up close you dont get the full impact that someone standing further away gets.

I hope that makes sense. I've had a few beers ....

Some good points made. Yes, I think that standing reasonably close to the cab did "protect" me from the sound a fair bit. Also the sheer quality and richness of the RV's tone made sure there was no harshness at all.
I don't think it's a faulty amp - I have been reading on the Orange forum that Orange's are fairly quiet for their stated wattage.
Anyway, it was nice to be able to play the amp right in it's sweet spot for the whole gig, with no attenuation. Simply great tone.

Even so, I'm sure my 50W Plexi at the same settings would have been deafening !

Do you get much gain out of your Plexi at house volumes? I can't get the 1959 to distort :P

Plexis will only distort as the volume gets really high
Certainly not at home volumes.

A volume setting that in your bedroom would be deafening and give you a headache and ringing ears may well not do it at a gig
This is partly because of the bigger room- meaning that the sound pressure levels (SPLs) are way less

I worry more for guys in bands doing loud rehearsals in a 15'x15' room than guys playing at a pub or club venue -the SPLs in that room can get too much

+1, this is what 90% of rehersal rooms are like, and it's not good.

+2

We're VERY loud in rehearsals (post gain of 4 or 5 on my Peavey 5150-II full stack), and even with earplugs (I use some of the proper musician's ones), it can get quite bad after two hours of playing. I wouldn't DREAM of doing a whole practice without the earlugs, the amp just kicks out so much power!!

That said, my wife lost the hearing in one of her ears at our first gig. Came back a day later. O_o

Only with the judicious use of a PPIMV and a hotplate. Mine is quite a gainy amp really, and is noticeably overdriving with the channel vol on about 3.
There are a number of slightly different versions of the 1987 and 1959 circuits (they have the same pre-amps), and mine is about as gainy as they get. It has the split cathode arrangement and and other tweaks which make it slightly more gainy than other "Plexi's".
